Right-wing duality -- like how ICE is raiding workplaces to arrest the lazy, unemployed illegals.

Please don't bother looking for logic with these people.

Riddle me this Batman: If Confederate statues honor "Democrats", why did Republicans get mad at their removal?

My (white) neighbor told me Juneteenth was an insult to black people and that if she was black she'd be pissed about it. She also says that George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are much more deserving of a federal holiday. (They came up because I think my office traded president's day for Juneteenth)

[–] huppakee@feddit.nl 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hope your neighbor checks that with actual black people, but I guess she doesn't know any.

[–] grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 days ago

That's a fair guess. I see her socialize with the other dog folk in the neighborhood, and that is mostly generic white. There are minority dog folk in the neighborhood, but none who I read as black. (I've not asked and it's not my place to be certain about anyone's background without being told)

Because they are racists but they hate when you correctly point that out, so they claim responsibility for ending slavery because they think that will make them immune to criticism of their current racism.

A little puzzle I like to give Right Wingers who think "America ended slavery, and Conservatives helped! Where's our thank you?"

If I were to hijack an airplane and send it into the Statue of Liberty, but at the very last minute I swerve, successfully avoid it, and return to my seat, returning control to the pilots in the process.

Do I get a medal for saving the plane, or do I get arrested for hijacking it?

Conservatives didnt help end slavery though. The Republicans at the time were not the conservative party. They were progressive relative to the Democrats of the time. Their was a ideological shift in the middle 20th century that swapped the party ideologies. Republicans today would have been Democrats back then and vice versa. They are claiming Republican victories of the past because they are technically they same party, but they in no way, shape, or form the same party ideologically, just the same name. It's the ship of Theseus in policitical party form.

I know this, you know this, GP knows this, and Republicans know it. They're making the argument because they think they can win with it, not because they think it's rational.

Grand parent post.

The General Public? I dunno.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

That just proves that Democrats are the real racists!

You can never win against someone that applies extreme selection bias to history.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 44 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They want to own everything. They prefer people, but they'll settle for the argument, until they can get back to people.

[–] fubbernuckin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

I wouldn't say they settle, they want both all the time.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago

As usual, it's not because they wanted to make a point of doing something to benefit others, they just want it as a talking point to take something away from their opponents.

You know how if you've got something really biting and witty you want to say to someone, so you kind of manufacture a little segue just so you can fire it off?

Yesterday my republican co-worker did that just so she could say "juneteenth, pff whatever". That is what she considers comedy.

Edit to add: she paused to laugh at that point as if to invite me to share in the joke. She really is that dreary of a person.

[–] callouscomic@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

These asshats never put themselves in the shoes of those who had to live through the actual context of the event, to comprehend WHY it holds significance. If anything they are proving the NEED for a holiday and remembrance.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I KNOW THIS ONE!!!

It's because the conservative movement is also a racist movement.

You'll understand when you're older. Checkmate, atheist.
