Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Define "pervert"? One group's "normal" is another group's "that's fucked up, dude".

A decade before the meToo movement, old people would just be all creepy AF and we would just shrug at it.

Like a 70yo grandpa drooling over a college girl and go, "Id love to eat her ass" and Grandma is like, "Oh you!".

I havent seen it in years but yeah what the hell.

"A person whose sexual behavior is regarded as abnormal and unacceptable." Completely subjective.

I'm a pervert, and goatse is pretty normal to me nowadays, and almost can perform it IRL.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean I don't want to encourage behavior that is probably not healthy for your body, but it doesn't really hurt other people (unless you're sending pictures or videos of it to other people to harass them) and it's not quite extreme enough to really count as selfharm, so it's kinda whatever.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The whole "what if it hurts you" argument when it comes to more extreme fetishes is just kinkshaming/homophobia, and was like the main argument of homophobes in the 2000's. Even normal anal sex has its dangers of harm. "If you have buttsex, you will immediately become incontinent, and poop yourself." - something I've heard on the daily.

Sports, even regular, non-extreme ones, have their own dangers. I know a former social worker, who knew a lot of former, disabled sportsmen on the streets. Is there a massive outrage? No.

I'll be into large anal insertions no matter what. No problem with continence so far.

IMO it's a valid concern with this kind of thing, the issue is where you go from there - you could easily use this to outlaw certain practices entirely, or you just do research and make an effort about informing people about the dangers (if any) and how to do it more safely. And yes, I do also disapprove of the kinds of sports that frequently lead to disabilities, especially if the sportsmen and -women aren't properly informed or even coerced (definitely a concern in professional sports).

No problem with continence so far.

AFAIK this will often be a concern in later years, as the tissues becomes less elastic etc. with age. On top of that, a lot of the media around anal are promoting harmful practices - anal fissures are definitely unhealthy and can lead to dangerous infections. Not saying you are practicing or promoting harmful practices, but it's common.

Perversion is in our blood and anyone can awaken it under certain circumstances.
