Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

This was a new idea to me. That patriarchy and absolute power were connected to abuse and rape. I feel like someone just turned the lights on.

[–] dumples@midwest.social 6 points 16 hours ago

I think what this is pointing out is that those who want to abuse will find a system that gives them systematic power to abuse. So these people will be naturally drawn to systems where they have power and a support system to protect them. So its a self selecting group who are looking to abuse are drawn to system with strong hierarchical structures.

Stop telling yourself it's a few bad apples.

The whole saying is "A few bad apples spoil the bunch." Saying that some people in a group are just a few bad apples doesn't imply that the larger group is sound. It suggests that the entire group is spoiled.

Edit to add: For anyone who hasn't seen it, here's a list of 1,376 (and counting) Republican sexual predators, abusers, and enablers.

"..the barrel." Apples don't come in bunches, but at the time the saying was coined they were carted around like that. (Also it only took one, not a few.)

(I suppose the modern version is "one nazi spoils the bar.")

[–] psychothumbs@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It does drive me crazy how people butcher that expression.

Right up there with pulling oneself up by their bootstraps, which was coined to make fun of rich fucks thinking this was somehow possible.

Adding on "The customer is always right".

People often forget the next few words which are "in matters of taste".

In which case, yes, absolutely. If a paying customer wants a well done steak with ketchup, sure. Or if they want some ugly clothing. Hell yeah, as long as they're paying.

It's not an excuse to act like an entitled asshole.

That "it's only a few bad apples" would be a reasonable answer if that system gets rid and punishes those bad apples.

But if the system protects and ignores those bad apples, then the whole system is rotten

The entire top level of the current GOP is a pedophile, christofascist cult.

What if this takes down Donald and half of Washington?

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 108 points 2 days ago (3 children)

honestly, I'm perfectly okay with it taking down all of washington, if it comes to that.

[–] MIDItheKID@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

This is the part I love. There are MAGA folk who are like "Bill Clinton is in the files too" and I'm like "hell yeah, lock him up". Shit, lock up every person that visited that island. Drain the swamp, as it was said. If there were democrats that went there, lock them all up. Lock up the movie stars, and whoever else. These are fucking pedophiles.

we are supposed to form a more perfect union.

maybe next time without all the greed, racism, and I think we can all agree no pedos too..

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 22 points 2 days ago

I’m sure the Canadians would be happy to help again.

Pedocon theory is a theory in the same way as the theory as gravity, or term theory.

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

Someone should cover Tim Minchin’s ‘The Pope Song’, but targeting Trump/GOP.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You misspelled pedocon "fact"

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

'theory' in the scientific sense

[–] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Right. A theory correctly predicts behavior, until proven otherwise
