Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

This whole article is goddamn infuriating:

"We're very used to proving our age in lots of different areas of life at the moment, and it makes sense that we do so more assertively when it comes to online activity," he said.

"I think people actually think it's pretty weird that you are age checked when you want to buy a can of Monster, but you're not age checked when you access certain material online."

No one that is sane thinks that is weird, peter. No one. If anything they think the new age verification is weird.

Chris Sherwood, chief executive of children's charity the NSPCC, said Friday's new rules mean services "can no longer evade their duty for protecting children".

It is NOT THE SERVICE'S DUTY TO PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN. IT'S THE PARENTS'!

Derek Ray-Hill, interim head of the Internet Watch Foundation, meanwhile welcomed the new rules for sites allowing porn but said "there is still more to be done".

But of course there is. Derek wants to know everything about your kinks when you log in.

Many of the sites which operate age verification services say they do not retain ID, videos or images required for them to carry out age checks for any longer than necessary.

Which can mean six fucking months for all we know.

Anyway, I welcome the age of paper porn and VPNs in The UK.

Thank God massive data leaks don't regularly happen and sensitive personal data is usually handled with great care and responsibility.

UK to see record number of VPN new users.

And children visiting dodgy porn sites instead of the better moderated ones! Good job UK!

They don't need safety for children, they need their parents to think they are safer

This is ridiculous, every kid in the country will know how to start up a VPN and get around this. In another article some campaigner called Naomi is claiming there’s a big correlation between sexual abusers and viewing violent porn. That’s like saying there’s a big correlation between people who drink water and being thirsty, so water must make people thirsty. Kids start forming their impressions of women when they’re born, they don’t suddenly change from respectful young men into misogynists in the time it takes to have a wank.

She also says that by stopping people from watching porn it’ll eventually lead to porn being eradicated. She’s delusional.

It's not porn turning them into misogynists. It's shit influncers like Andrew Tate and other small dick incels.

Reminder that this is #12 on Umberto Eco's list of Ur-fascism warnings. When you let authorities curb expression of things that bother you, you have given them permission to curb any expression they want.

Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters. This is the origin of machismo (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality).

„Guten Tag, mein Name ist Umberto. Ich bin gekommen um Ihre Tochter zu Vögeln.“ „Um was?“ „Umberto!“

English: "Hello, my name is Umberto. I've come to fuck your daughter." “To what?” “Umberto!”

Pinky promise?

How about I just pay for a good VPN that isn't under your finger and avoid a "oops, somehow these IDs got leaked" crisis.

"But then how are we supposed to know what you're doing?"

Exactly.

Who knew it was going to be so easy to honeytrap all the politicians?

I mean, I guess everyone but, I'd never thought about it.

It would do you all very well to remember that we British are most civilised, unlike those yankee baboons. Most civilised, indeed.
