Every time I laugh at these memes I think that maybe I should be screened for ADHD.

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I prefer to keep mine as Schrödinger's ADHD. Best keep that box closed :)

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Oh, I'm sure I'll get distracted and forget. Because that's a normal thing done by neurotypical people

[–] bonus_crab@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Tbh it really isnt

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

work-hyperwork-omegawork-burnout-burnout-burnout-burnout-....

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

And then you ask the system when the next work cycle is and it just shows a loading bar that gets stuck at 13% before finishing the last 87 (I think? or whatever, I'm gay I can't do math and not getting a calculator for a joke) in half a second with no warning.

Also its so weird seeing Admin next to your name when you comment on my shit now... I feel like I'm in trouble

Oh I could have fun with that.

As for the math thing, it's one of those stereotypes we adopted like that we all walk fast, drink iced coffee, etc

[–] voodooattack@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

one of those stereotypes we adopted

Alan Turing would’ve liked to have a word with whoever came up with that

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

And wear funny hats?

Maybe that’s Freemasons.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago

It also shows Mod next to my name. So double the trouble.

I do a week worth of work in a panic over 6 random hours. Then doom scroll. Keeps me employed I guess...

Currently cleaning the storage room as I'm one Windows 11 install from madness.

Ah, Friday progress meetings. Yes I'm three weeks behind, yes I know I said that three weeks ago. Yes I could have probably reached out for help but I wasn't far along enough then to understand what exactly I needed help on.

You gotta forgive yourself too. Some tasks are so new and so encompassing that you literally need some time to break it apart in your head and attack it from a few angles.

Curling up in a ball and fretting about it whilst doing nothing is one of those angles. It prepares you mentally for tackling it from other angles.

If it was as immediately easy as they made it out to be, then it wouldn't be a problem they would delegate out. They have a rough idea in their heads how easy it is because it was built using their own convoluted logic which you then have to learn as an outsider

the problem is when you sign for a job, or postpone it, into a time when this hyperworkmode is required, but it doesn't activate cuz this job ain't one of those things that you get obsessed over.

[–] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm feeling attacked here.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

My work here is done

[–] Uiop@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

What about no work?

Best i can do for ya!

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 days ago

I straight up never would have known that I had ADHD without memes like this, I swear. It's crazy.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

I like to think of myself as the human equivalent of a project Orion prototype. I work in pulses.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck

-still technically undiagnosed

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

I did my week's work yesterday afternoon. Today is now coffee.

[–] BurningRiver@beehaw.org 6 points 3 days ago

Me: close 50 cases yesterday because our team got called out and is half dead weight

Also me: calls in sick today because fuck em, that’s why.

[–] bilouba@jlai.lu 4 points 3 days ago

Isn't it a "light" bipolar disorder?

For me a Pomodoro timer works well. 25 minute task, 10 minute break, repeat. But to be honest I did spend the day playing dwarf fortress till 16:00, then rushing the task I had alloted the entire day for in 90 minutes.

[–] brognak@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Same, but also specifically I have a Pomodoro cube timer on my desk. If I use an app or website I get distracted, the cube is simple, fast, and weirdly effective.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Fuck, that describes me too well

[–] Frigidlollipop@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (3 children)

What are the best jobs for these types of people? Im a sales admin and just lost a boss who was amazing with letting us have freedom. Dreading the new boss's setup already. I dont want to be an admin forever. Ive heard medical (EMS, nurse, radiography) and thinking like sales/marketing are good ideas. I like helping people in an environment where they arent already angry when they come to me lmao.

Some creative fields are great with this!

But it really depends on the kinda workplace you’re at and the management style. Lots of old school folks prefer the 9-5, minimal bathroom breaks, exact 1 hour long lunch, etc and you’ll find those people in all industries.

My office has always been more chill about the time spent at work and is more concerned with “are you getting your work done & is it quality” vs “is your butt in that seat from 9-5?” I’ve coworkers who visit a dog park for lunch, jog, or pick up kids from school. They just announce it, pop away, pop back in, and as long as you’re not missing meetings and getting what needs to be done in time, no one cares.

I have an industrial job where I'm on my feet all day, and most of the day, I have various pieces that are at different stages in the process all at once. Everybody else in my department also has ADHD. It's a cakewalk for me, but I've noticed that most neurotypicals struggle with it.

I would get way too antsy sitting in an office or at home all day.

[–] derpgon@programming.dev 1 points 3 days ago

I heavily vibe with the meme, and I work as a programmer. Usually I have a task or two for several days so I just work at my own pace if it is not some high priority stuff. Sometimes it is 1 hour on 2 hours off, sometimes it is 10 hours of hyperfocus and a feeling of emptiness when I am done and want to continue.

[–] knomie@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

Personal experience: I'm in this meme for "thinking" work. For light physical work, I can work in a steady state for quite some time.

I think it comes from the possibility to go "all out" with thinking and tiring the brain very quickly. And we're evolutionary absolutely not used to that.

Coincidentally, I think most people suffering from this are also in programming or scientific work. But causation could also be the other way, such that people with ADHD tendencies choose such jobs more often.

It's called ADHD.
