THE POLICE PROBLEM

4000 readers
391 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

So. When they ram your car and jump out with guns. Without ID’ing themselves. Is running them over in self defense allowed?

Legally. Already know the answer to the other one.

I think I have noticed a lot of the SS Nazi thugs are rolling up in Jeep Waggoneers. Is this a thing?

American here. Our mainstream news outlets barely covers these ICE raids. We're in a full blown dictatorship. Now even Reddit is perma banning anyone who suggests that the 2nd amendment was created for situations like this.

Dear DHS,

These are just cowards with guns. Do better. Become an agency with dignity, honor, and basic human decency.

With all the respect you deserve,

Since when does news get geo-blocked? The article linked and the entire website give me a "This content is not available in your region". Is this expected from Chicago Tribune?

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 4 points 1 day ago

It's blocked in the EU, most likely because they don't want to comply with GDPR.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This should be actionable.

Seems like it’s not, though. Seems like fascism is just routine now in the US.

that makes me feel really unsafe for myself and every US citizen if that can happen under a mask and a gun. i see proud boy nazis rounding up everyday colored citizens.

[–] musubibreakfast@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I feel you, I left the US shortly after Trump was elected. I'm happy being in Europe until he's gone but my heart goes out to everyone who doesn't have that luxury.

[–] fox2263@lemmy.world 62 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The aggression is insane. Not even talking at the car.

The regular police would have a conversation and at least an argument before raising guns, and it would be a last resort of dragging someone out the car to the ground.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah. Would've thought they are in an active warzone

Nazi America working hard on bringing the fourth Reich into reality.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 93 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

The line I've seen repeatedly is that White America is getting to see how African Americans and Latino migrants have been living since The War On Crime started.

Every day, we get to see another Rodney King or George Floyd. Wave after wave of police acting with utter impunity, doing unspeakable violence, while liberal leadership throws up it's hands or turns a blind eye.

FFS, this was in Chicago. Blatantly illegal, breaking a couple dozen state laws. The mayor, the governor, the CPD, the local prosecutors and sheriffs... where the fuck are they?

@dbtng@eviltoast.org you previously asserted that the current regime is not fascist. Do you still stand by that statement?

Damn, I love it. You called out 4-5 boot lickers in this thread alone!

@Letsdothisok@lemmy.world about a year ago, you claimed that comparing the current US dictatorship to the Nazi regime was a “ridiculous comparison”. Do you still stand by that, or do you finally see the parallels?

What the actual fuck are they doing? They caused that accident. I hope this woman sues the living shit out of them.

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 75 points 3 days ago (14 children)

When this is all over, these fascist goons will face justice for their actions. There are accounts of every single action, and the next United States Justice Department will not handle it lightly.

We fucked up by not finishing off the Confederacy in Reconstruction, but in the wise words of the honorable George W. Bush: “There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me twi— you can't get fooled again.”

[–] JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Didn't most Nazis also get off scot free or even get jobs in science or the government? Only 12 high profile ones didn't. Of the 100,000 arrested for US trials, 2500 were identified ad "major war criminals". 142 were convicted of a crime.

Not to mention US constant blocking of the prosecution of war criminals both within and outside.

Probably >99% of fascist goons will get off with zero consequences.

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but 2025 is not 1945. There's so much more technology that I think could enable tracking all of this.

Download Signal Private Messenger.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/signal-private-messenger/id874139669

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms

https://signal.org/android/apk/

Create local groups.

Organize there.

Migrate any sensitive discussion to Signal. If possible, migrate all messaging to encrypted traffic. By using encrypted traffic you safeguard encrypted tactical exchange via obfuscation. A drop in an ocean is less identifiable than a drop in a pond.

Always turn on disappearing messages. Have a backup mechanism for when they take down Signal, as it is inevitable.

You've been invaded. Act accordingly.

Elect people who make it their platform to resist this. Sweep aside any feckless moderate who doesn't make it a central plank of their platform.

@DonutsRMeh@lemmy.world you have previously defended ICE as just arresting the illegals. How do you explain this?

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago

@DonutsRMeh@lemmy.world I know you saw this. How do you explain ICE clearly assaulting people who aren’t immigrants?

The Department of Homeland Security later released a statement claiming that Figueroa was at fault, saying “she crashed into an unmarked government vehicle and violently resisted arrest, injuring two officers.”

Figueroa was released the same day a few hours later without charges.

Get this evidence in front of Judge Ellis and start them contempt hearings.

@Rekorse@lemmy.dbzer0.com you have previously stated that ICE agents are “just like you and I” and that they will “actually save the country”. Do you still stand by that statement?

This type of thing is expected in a fascist country. It’s like saying a fish swims when placed in water.

[–] varnia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well done, Americans to let this Fascist become president and turn your country into an active warzone for anyone not fitting the white meter.

Remember, when a car suddenly cuts into your lane and hits your car, then several masked men pointing guns and wearing camouflage pour out, and then they violently drag you out of the car on to the floor and pin you down. Your duty is to say "Thank you for your service, please tread on me."

If you don't, the terrorists win.
