Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

If they had a secret/method/process they'd use it to get rich instead of fleecing people.

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 days ago

The secret method is fleecing people

One of the fitness people I follow has two apps and he regularly tells his viewers "You dont NEED my apps to get great results, you dont NEED to watch my videos either. I just think they both help. Now just subscribing as a member is just money for me so you should definitely do that"

Which is a level of influencer honesty I can definitely get behind.

Are you talking about a certain guy who openly talks about what he does beyond the gym & diet to have the build he has? If so, I watch because he's really good at explaining technique. Even though I'm not trying to be a bodybuilder. I just want to be strong and not get hurt.

Hell yeah, +1 for the guy with the weirdly shaped head

People are always looking to make a easy dollar but pretty much everything except having a job is too good to be true.

People want to believe because they wish badly for the money. Back in the late 90s my friends and I keep seeing papers advertising a guarenteed money making system for only $2.

Finallt one of my friends could not resist and ordered it.

He got instructions to put signs all over offering the money making system for $2.

"As you paid for it you can see that it works."

[–] Sunsofold@lemmings.world 7 points 3 days ago

If you are smart enough to be suspicious, you are not their target audience. They feed on the fact many modern societies expect the mentally ill/handicapped to take care of themselves.

Pretty much everyone uses these clickbait titles regardless of whether they give good advice or not. I briefly followed a "finance guru" who does similar stuff with his thumbnails/titles and he just repeats variations of the same advice in every video: 1. Time in the market beats timing the market, and 2. diversify your investments. So far, this has worked out very well for me for the past ten years, but who knows if it's going to continue trending upwards.

[–] dusty_raven@discuss.online 3 points 2 days ago

A lot of the "good advice" gurus just try to hype up the boring, well-known answer: get good sleep, eat well, minimize debt, diversify investments, etc. I appreciate it, it's nice to have some motivation for doing things the "right way".

[–] db2@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They platform literal convicts and abusers. Set your bar really low so when you're disappointed it isn't as much.

Yes people actually believe them and it’s embarrassing. They also believe that these rich guys do these seminars out of the kindness of their hearts.

Some do apparently or they wouldn't keep making the videos. Same thing for people who send out phishing emails and other scams. It must work sometimes.

"Spiritual gurus", "self help gurus", "crypto gurus", "business gurus" they tend to be full of shit because if they were as good as they claim they would be making money with their skills and insights instead of making YouTube videos.

Why people fall for it just because someone claims to be an "expert" I will never understand, but I guess you could say the same about many things: advertising, politics, religion etc.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Some do apparently or they wouldn’t keep making the videos

Whole lot of people are desperate to make money. They'll keep doing it for a while even if it isn't making money. Multi-level marketing schemes as an example. A few make a ton of money on MLMs, more than 90% lose money. They're still everywhere

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago

For the money ones, I think it works because there are many people who just really want to feel some hope financially

[–] dogs0n@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

People do, but I have a hard time believing them. If you have a secret unlimited money glitch, why would you give it away? Or why would you charge any amount of money for it in a course?

Sometimes it can maybe be a clickbaity title to real advice or an educational video, but anyone peddling advice in a course, etc, should be seen as the snake oil salesmen that they are.

The real advice is always available for free on the internet, just have to find that dude that is so compassionate about the real stuff they give it to you straight up.

[–] fullsquare@awful.systems 4 points 4 days ago

dude, people join irl face to face cults, of course they do

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 4 points 4 days ago

we got people getting “ai psychosis” so yeah…

These guys don’t really deal with who you’re talking about…but here’s a great podcast worth boosting…

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Sadly they do. The best way to make money is just be consistent in what you want to do that makes money.

If you want to make the most money too then above a career is having a business. Building a business next to a job/career is possible even though it will be tough

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 days ago

Lots of people. Way too many. Same with the BS TV doctors like dr Oz and dr Phill. Lotta dumb and gullible people out there.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Scams exist because enough people fall for them. If there weren't people falling for it, you wouldn't see people doing it.

[–] Rhoeri@piefed.world 3 points 4 days ago

There’s a shit ton of stupid people that absolutely believe that nonsense.

FOMO is a hell of a drug.

Some people just have a “well what if they’re right? I might be missing out on $1 million!”

[–] worhui@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Yes. I’m apparently a fool for not going along with it.

It’s vigorously supported.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 1 points 4 days ago

The fact that there are a ton of them means it works. A lot of gullible people either buy products they endorse, or pay monthly subscriptions for regular video sessions to listen to them.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online -1 points 4 days ago

The worst is that Tai Lopez and his garage full of books he claims to have read. I guess he didn't mind them being stained with car fumes. Dude probably didn't even own a bookcase and had it put up for his stupid infomercial.
