Come a little closer, and make sure to get a good long look at the hiking trail map.

I once got stung by an entire nest of wasps for the crime of writing down my minigolf score on the little wooden stand they elected to infest.

I got stung by a wasp because I touched it as a kid. Oops.

Interestingly, I remember getting stung, I remember crying, but I don’t remember what the pain felt like.

Maybe my memory of it isn't so good (I was little too} but I don't think it was that bad past the initial shock, I just remember being covered in hot, hard bumps that faded after a few hours

The local quest board

I LOVE these, big big fan! They're at all the public-land hiking trails around me. Nice little trail map, often dry-erase notes over the glass marking flooded trails or temporarily protected areas. History lessons or something about what makes the area special. Single mittens and kit left like a makeshift lost and found. You know you're in for a really good hike when they have a sign in book! Such an underrated low-cost public service.

I thought this was a covered guillotine. You know, so the condemned billionaire doesn't get wet if it rains on their big day.

Oh, you mean a message board?

Like the term used to describe the thing we're currently posting on?

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

This one doesn't have a hat though.

motion to get our board a hat

They always seem to be sun bleached

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Well, they tried.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

I like them if kept up to date.

just post

There's actually 2

[–] Lembot_0006@programming.dev 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We don't have many of them where I live, but they never have any useful information.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not literally "never", but often it's so cursory that it's useless, or written so poorly, it's hard to make sense of, or the display is old and faded.

However, when this structure is used as a community bulletin board, and the locals actually interact with it, it can be entertaining, at least.

where I live

I'm almost sure we live on the different sides of the planet, so you can expect that out experiences with... these things are different :)

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Do yours have wasps on that side of the world? The people who pointed that out were so spot on I don't think I'll ever look at one of these again and not think wasps

[–] Lembot_0006@programming.dev 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Wasps exists here as species but are very rare. These "billboards" associate here with unsorted outdated data nobody asked for.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Ours are usually at trailheads in state/local parks that have the trail routes and a bit of information pertaining to what flora/fauna may be typical to the area. Maybe a bit of history

In my region they are mostly situated near government buildings with data about telephone numbers, working hours and some crazy gibberish. All is outdated.

I love when I'm lost while playing DayZ and come across one.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

you mean blowie huts?

best place for a blowjob on a rainy hike.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

My friend drew a guillotine version of this on a post it a while back. I should check if its still on the wall
