This is not a YSK. This is news. Where are the mods?

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 51 points 2 days ago (6 children)

After 15+ years, I actually just left reddit the other day, it's a lot more fun here. I basically stuck around for a couple local communities. Now I'm just corrupting my posts to help out their IPO.

They're forcing you to be logged in just to view old.reddit now. So you need a phone number now. That's not suspicious at all.

[–] blau@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Same here. Tried to flee in the initial wave, but got sucked back in. Have many different accounts for each device. Yet, I went to old.reddit in private mode, got the login wall and thought gold riddance. Thanks reddit for reminding me.

15 years was my oldest account.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yep. I like that this feels more like an old school forum rather than being down-voted for not pleasing advertisers.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People were reporting getting the old.reddit login wall way back but I guess it finally rolled out more, I'm getting it now too

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I read a bit about it and some people suggested doing so and so. I decided I'm good at this point. I use waterfox, ublock, and noscript so it didn't happen to me until yesterday. Besides, the advertising got so out of control, the small local subs having the "I ate this here" and "what's the best place to have this food" got annoying. Let alone having some restaurant opening in six months having two of the same posts on the front page, like I said I stuck to small subs, and their website to be completely AI generated, images and all. Oh boy did the sub enjoy shitting all over them.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Fair, I think I'm going to use redlib as a workaround personally, even though the quality of the site is going downhill fast there's still a lot of information I can't really find elsewhere, and often search results where every other link is even more saturated with spam than the reddit comments are.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It undid itself somehow for me. I even uninstalled the extension for old reddit and it just loads up as old without login

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

Honestly, I just gave up on it. It's probably partially because of all the extensions I have.

[–] ennof@feddit.org 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Same. Did the same thing just last week.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

I've been here 3 years, and have had no motivation to go back.

It's definitely not the same - it is smaller. But I adjusted and it's been good.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I'm actually surprised how much interaction there is here instead of being down voted by bots for criticizing a company. Heh the last post I made, someone was like I don't know who is down voting you, someone that works for the company or a bot. And this was a small forum.

[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The API apocalypse didn't help you leave?

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It drove me nuts. I really stayed for the local sub. It was nice knowing what was happening around town but oh well. Gotta check if there's one here.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Definitely check, but niche content tends not to survive here. Reddit itself used to be like this, in its own early days.

Though even on Reddit, so many niche subs look to be dying off, getting spammed by bots and disguised ads but the actual OC decreasing over time.

And a lot of young people simply eschew social media altogether, preferring instead to hang out irl. That seems ideal actually... at least in an era where you cannot trust any information online.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I get that, younger friends that I game with don't really do social media. It's basically just small servers on discord and whoever is local we hang out in person, so yeah I did notice that shift. The spam really got to me on reddit and it got worse and worse. Stuff like secret santa and exchanging stuff or making art for people was fun. I traded a painting for a mflb vape lol. Now it's ad, ad, karma bot, propaganda, ad, ad, cat picture, content, data fishing ad, an onion article---I mean news, ad, etc. And this is with an ad blocker; they upped their game since they realize most people are using them so why not just make fake looking posts that are just ads right?

[–] AustralianSimon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Facebook admitted they bot content and comments to keep the humans stuck in the maze interacting.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You know I actually wondered about if "content" creators work up an account and then sell it. There was this girl that would post videos about things in Japan, she had some noticeable pimples or whatever on her face. The last I saw it was heavily filtered pictures and now it's about stuff in the US. Kinda like her image was copy pasted. I use facebook because siblings kids and stuff to keep up with it and occasionally watch language videos. As far as I'm concerned, facebook thinks I'm Japanese lol

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 1 points 1 day ago

Such seems to happen on Lemmy too (less so on PieFed due to tools built to counteract it) - see e.g. https://piefed.zip/c/strange_activity_investigations@piefed.zip/p/1788826/what-else-can-i-say and the community it is in - but far less often to almost not at all, vs. like every other post in those other more popular platforms.

[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

YSK that reddit sucks donkey balls. (No offense to donkeys, whom are very cute)

[–] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 58 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think we can kind of just assume that all industries are always trying to work with anyone to influence anyone

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

So long as the checks clear

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

Imagine that. A business with no physical product gathers up the marketers. "How can we use words, along with the usual smoke and mirrors, to keep this empty gravy-train rolling?". My cool "tech" companies nowadays produce healthy food.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They always use the word “trust” for the manipulation of Reddit conversations. Fucking ghouls.

We need vetted online spaces that keep that shit out.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 1 day ago

Be the change you want to see.

That is not just good advice, it also helps us to feel less powerless about all that is going on in the world around us over which we have little to no control.

Some people help the Threadiverse grow by making new accounts on instances other than Lemmy.World, which has like half the people and 90% of the most active communities. You're fine to stay there, but you could help by posting to others that are on different instances, to help spread the load?

And since you are on Lemmy.world, maybe help mod some of those existing ones... or create a new community of your own?

There's lots of ways to help out. By posting, you already do, and commenting too.

That’s a great question. And I don’t have an answer for large open platforms.

It does make me yearn for smaller local communities that are actually communities and not just open spaces anyone can slither into. You know? It makes me realize how online spaces are not healthy. They were fine for a fleeting few years. But now they are co-opted and nasty.

It’s an aspirational statement without practical easy action to take, yes.

[–] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You mean the basic premise of the internet?

The internet solved these problems a long time ago by the basic network of relatively small communities being uninteresting targets. The modern internet broke everything by centralizing it all and inserting themselves in the middle to monetize. It added another layer to the OSI network model. The centralized corporate social media layer.

They broke it and sold you the solutions to problems they caused.

The core premise of reddit and Digg was that the people would decide by voting. We've seen ample evidence by now that this model doesn't work. Yet lemmy is based on it. The saving grace might be federation. In other words the model you mentioned. In other words the internet.

Vetting used to happen by persistent usernames that are known to be real life average people, with no apparent ulterior motives. Some social media sites like reddit killed that by making throwaway accounts common. Other social media sites made being a known user too dangerous due to popularity. Which reddit has fallen into now.

Getting too popular means they might have sold out by becoming an "influencer". It also means putting themselves in personal danger due to the psychos out there who would threaten their personal safety. Which drives away good users, leaving only the opportunists. We've been settling in a mix of both. A conveyor belt of pseudonyms that are basically farmed bot accounts for shilling, made to look trustworthy enough.

The Digg/reddit vote model was a solution to a problem that didn't exist. The problem it was really trying to solve was monetization. Digg tried to monetize and failed. Reddit tried for decades to monetize and it finally succeeded. Look what a piece of shit it is.

It's often talked about how to grow lemmy like other big social media. Maybe it doesn't need to. That brings problems of the big social media sites.

Something nobody ever mentions when reminiscing about the old internet is how slow and small forums were. There would be handful of new comments each day. Maybe a new thread or two. You check it once or twice a day, and then went outside. Nobody infinite scrolled the old forums. Nobody cared that there wasn't enough content. If somebody had something to post, they posted. Otherwise they didn't. No problem.

If one forum wasn't interesting enough. Then you went to others. If they all had nothing going on then you stopped looking at the internet.

You establish trust the same way humans have since the dawn of history. Trust in a person and their wares is established by being a known poster with good history of being there to post when they had something meaningful to say. The guy shoveling his wares 24/7 is out for one thing. It's the make money off you, or impose their opinions on people.

Tech companies reinvent solutions to these things while disguising monetization schemes. We already had the solutions. Nobody uses those anymore.

What we have now is a techbro libertarian hellhole they like to call zero trust society or whatever. So everyone operates under the premise that these problems they caused are solved by pure technology. Deposit your cryptocurrency now to obtain one unit of Trust(TM). Here is your Trusted(TM), not sponsored, non-affiliated content (terms and conditions apply). Don't forget my fees for facilitating this exchange of Trust(TM). Thank for your patronage.

Forums used date posted or date last commented to sort. Outside forums almost everything has likes or something.

Surely someone can come up with a Fediverse design where you can just do basic sorting or BYO algorithm for sorting.

Maybe the answer is forums and extensions.

Who's gonna vet the Vetter

[–] AustralianSimon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Or vet the vetter vetter.

Me. I'll be the final watcher who watches the watchers. You don't have to worry about me turning into a despot as I'm just too god damned ADHD to run a proper dictatorship.

[–] Noblesavage@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So you'll hyper focus on being a watcher of the watchers until you get overwhelmed by the task and burnout whereupon you'll be completely absent from the post and the watchers will have no one watching them anymore because you'll be in bed staring between your phone and the ceiling and you'll occasionally get out of bed to use the washroom and open your fridge for something to eat but then remember that you haven't restocked on anything and close the fridge door and go back to bed with a glass of water at least and lament the fact that you are no longer doing the thing you said you would do and you'll ruminate about that for several hours until you pull up your phone again because enough time has gone by now that the social media feeds are somewhat fresh again and you're only seeing a handful of stale posts in your feed that you already upvoted but there's enough new content to keep you scrolling until that gets old so you start looking for something to stream to take your mind off the fact that you're no longer watching the watchers which would be fine but there's nothing good enough for you to actually click play on something so you keep scrolling until the app actually stops giving you suggestions which makes you panic for a second because how pathetic is it that you actually scrolled so much that the app isn't suggesting anything so you end up clicking on The Office for the hundredth time and pick up where you left off the last time you burntout which is the episode where Kevin brings the chili to work and it makes you breath slightly heavier out of your nostrils and it's just enough dopamine to keep you going for a bit longer.

I for one welcome our new ADHD overlord.

[–] isleepinahammock@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That sounds about right. Though of note I do have AuDHD, so I do also have that autistic sense of justice thing going for me. So when there's an egregious case of say the next national outrage of a cop shooting an unarmed black kid, I'll be able to hyper focus long enough to bring the hammer down on them. Just don't ask me to try and monitor everyone's Internet history for wrongthink or operate some nationwide reign of terror. I just don't have the spoons for that.

[–] FundMECFS@piefed.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Er heißt Ubervetter.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

See my other reply. It’s a good question.

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

What an overwraught title. "Advertising company pitches effectiveness of their advertisements" like... yeah, that's what they do? They're desperately trying to figure out how to make reddit profitable because boy-fuckin'-howdy are they doomed, this is just yet another in a long line of wildly exaggerated pitches they've made.

[–] Alexfire@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Oh no, fragmented landscape and brand visibility!! Lol corpo buzzwords.

[–] KC_Royalz@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

I really need to figure out my old accounts passwords and nuke them all

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

Ban indiscriminately, use only company-approved AI bots, profit.

Cant wait until the mask slips and even the layman can see.

that's where i want the meteor to hit

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 8 points 2 days ago

With only a little effort, a collective of like minded people could counteract this effectively.

Maybe some are already, I want to help though.

[–] rustyfish@piefed.world 9 points 2 days ago

I am so happy I committed suicide by admin.

[–] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

A few years ago I saw someone post a link about a more generalized promo that offers companies live alerts about keyword mentions and brand management.

[–] Gaslov@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Crazy, I would have thought reddit and lemmy were tight.
