Introducing the next product innovation from Elongated Muskrat: The Caliper Company

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 58 points 1 year ago (2 children)

melon-musk "Yeah, but I'm going to name it X-caliper. Because I think I am very clever."

You will live to see man-made horrors beyond your comprehension

[–] CoolYori@hexbear.net 49 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Why do I read Musk in Measureheads voice? Like this is a bit right out of Disco Elysium.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 45 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It would rule if a drunk guy just walked up to Musk and knocked him out with a spinning kick to the head

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not gonna happen; consequences of nerds telling everybody not to do adventurism.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago (2 children)

That barely even counts. If someone has the chance and is able to do the prison time that will for sure follow, fucking go for it. Adventurism is when you and your organization decide to start bombing places before doing any helpful stuff thst would get people on your side so you can get away with bombing places.

[–] EelBolshevikism@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

doing random crime by yourself is still adventurism. I’ve seen people rag on anarchists for doing the exact thing of individually assassinating leaders, at least.

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago

Well then maybe the nerds shouldn't have been such nerds about it.

Corvids are probably the coolest birds. They are smart as hell and they're goth as fuck as a bonus.

[–] edge@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I want to have a crow friend, but I don’t really get any opportunities to try.

He's right. This is why White Gladis is perhaps the smartest military leader of our times. Her brain is 4.5x more massive than a mere human's. Long live the joint dictatorship of the proletariat of oppressed marine ecosystems! white-gladis ever-given qin-shi-huangdi-fireball

[–] 420stalin69@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago

Larmarckism is true.

Case in point: society allows giant parasite douche bags to become billionaires and almost instantly Elon evolved to exist.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 31 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Guarantee this dude heard the word "assortative" in the last 24 hours.

You know how in the Big Lebowski the character "The Dude" says things that he just heard to other people to sound like he knows what's going on? And you're supposed to laugh at it because its funny when he tries to half ass explain something somebody else told him? That's Elon. Except with none of the chill. Or friends. Or day drunk grace. Or imagination. But he does share one aspect. As Walter says in the film, "Dude, you don't have a wife."

[–] Chapo_is_Red@hexbear.net 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Let's say it's true humans will be "dumber than house cats compared to AI" does he really think selective breeding (which takes generations) will increase intelligence at a fast enough rate for humans to keep up given how quickly he thinks AI is advancing?

Even on his own terms this doesn't make any fucking sense.

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago

He can't decide which side in the butlerian jihad he wants to join so he's playing both sides so he always comes out on top. Very normal brain genius this guy.

[–] WafflesTasteGood@hexbear.net 28 points 1 year ago

Literally big brain idea.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He's just saying this because he has a big head isn't it?

[–] HiImThomasPynchon@hexbear.net 30 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Nah he's saying it because he thinks bigger head = bigger brain = smarter

Move aside, Humanity, we must hand the world over to the blue whales.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 25 points 1 year ago

You know what?

Better world

[–] SSJ2Marx@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Blue Whales make the theory, Orcas do the praxis.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Their plan was a combination of deceit-based breeding program and human slavery, so yes

[–] Utter_Karate@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

Elon is so ahead of his time, already being dumber than AI when AI isn't even intelligent yet.

[–] Greenleaf@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I actually don’t hate Musk as much as some billionaires, but only because he’s such a dumbass it feels like he’s less dangerous than someone like Robert Mercer.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

The quiet person is always the dangerous one. Add to that the old proverb that says "beware an old man in a younger man's trade." With Musk's public actions and drug abuse even his money might not let him live as long as he'd like. Meanwhile the Koch Bros chugged along for eons leaving misery in their wake.

[–] red_stapler@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

Dude out here claiming people are becoming Jade Falcon aerospace pilots.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Where's the calipers emote?

[–] SootySootySoot@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

In fairness. Humans did specifically massively increase brain and skull size to fit all our smarts in, no?

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago (1 children)

On a time scale of millions of years, yes. Not in the last few decades. This is an insane thing to say.

[–] SSJ2Marx@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Genetic determinists think that a couple generations of PMC people marrying other PMC people will produce a new subspecies or some shit. Like bruv even ignoring how that's not really happening the way you think it is it takes a lot more than that.

[–] IzyaKatzmann@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What's PMC mean comrade? Help those of us with smaller heads

"Professional Managerial Class"

Preposterously Massive Cranium

[–] HexBroke@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, that's a hold-over from the caliper people

One group of researchers has scrutinised the primate archaeological record and concluded that the human brain has evolved just as would be expected for a primate of our size.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20727711-300-size-isnt-everything-the-big-brain-myth/

Here's another

The study examined ring-tailed lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs and grey mouse lemurs, which differ in their social system, diet and brain size, not only among each other, but also compared to the previously tested Old World monkeys and great apes.

The results of the new study show that despite their smaller brains lemurs' average cognitive performance... was not fundamentally different from the performances of the other primate species.

This is even true for mouse lemurs, which have brains about 200 times smaller than those of chimpanzees and orangutans.

[–] ped_xing@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Isn't there some evolutionary pressure, and it could be that it applies to primates in general and not just humans, for big-headedness? Like if big-headedness didn't help, then you could imagine two populations, A and B, where A has big heads and B doesn't. B loses fewer mothers during childbirth. Those mothers can then give birth more times, making B grow faster than A, so after enough time, we're all medium-head B-people. But somehow we ended up with me not being able to hold my head up in baby pictures. What gives?
