The decline in sperm counts is a growing concern worldwide, with rates plummeting by as much as 52% since the 1970s. This alarming trend has far-reaching implications for human health and reproduction, raising questions about the future of fertility and the potential consequences for individuals, families, and society as a whole.

chugging microplastics instead of getting a vasectomy

[–] BobDole@hexbear.net 59 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wasn’t this a result of a change in measurement technique, and these articles are just comparing the two datasets as if they’re direct equivalents? I remember seeing an explainer about this like a year ago.

There's lots of different ways to measure sperm health and ultimately sperm count isn't really that much of an impediment to eventually knocking someone up, unless it's very very low - see this study graph

17 August 2022 - Spatiotemporal trends in human semen quality

Overall, available data do not enable us to conclude that human semen quality is deteriorating worldwide or in the Western world, but that a trend is observed in some specific areas. To understand these trends and contrasts in sperm and semen quality, prospective studies should be encouraged and combined with assessment of the male exposome.

so fucking cursed why am I posting thisIs sperm the part of semen that has the protein, if it does?? Is it just weird nothing goo nutritionally otherwise?

[–] Aquilae@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

The part without the sperm is called seminal plasma, and its contents are the following (just remove the testes' contribution since that's what provides the sperm):

So it does have quite alot of nutrition even without the sperm, most notably protein (even without sperm), vitamin C, and sugars

Also this is a thing apparently

Real

Oh I love you all so much. I read the title, saw 33 comments and my first thought was "shit, someone's probably being weird in the comments, talking about how actually, for real, this is an important problem (it isn't)". Then I get in here and it's all jokes, except for one possible debunking of the article.

Thanks for brightening my day by not buying into "muh birthrates!!1!!!" nonsense!

[–] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

I wonder if it tastes the same.
