Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Why does Dutch look like what Americans think German sounds like?

[–] minkymunkey_7_7@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago (2 children)

There's only two things I hate in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

[–] monogram@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago

This person has culture

Calm down my cocaine

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

wait German and Dutch are different languages?? I thought it was like how "Spanish" and "Español" are the same just translated into that language...

[–] LucasWaffyWaf@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Germans speak deutsch, whereas the Dutch speak Nederlands. The German language is just called German in English, and the Dutch language is just called Dutch.

[–] Bloomcole@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well I speak Flemish, which is....Nederlands.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Where does Frisian fit into this map of weirdness?

[–] Bloomcole@lemm.ee 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No expert myself but what I know is that's the weird and mysterious one.
The rest is just confusing for those not familiar.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I was mostly making a joke, part of the reason Frisian is so weird is because it's rather ancient. Its an ancestor language of Dutch and a cousin language of English, hell my dialect is so gutteral that Frisian is more intelligible than some rural British dialects.

[–] Bloomcole@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They are all Germanic languages, so related.
Still there's some elements in it they can't explain.
I hear it's the same with Hungarian, that for some unknown reason has some Finnish elements in it apparently.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

If memory serves right the Finnic language used to expand as far as Perm so it's possible that when the Hungarians were still nomadic they were brushing up against the Finnic groups and picked up some words. As for Frisian as I said they are ancient as in they were doing Viking raids against Rome, they have interacted with damned near every Germanic language, a couple Celtic languages, and Latin where they picked up weird words is anyone's guess and that's assuming that these aren't archaic words held on from some even more ancient source.

I need to know how bad the Mexican one is. I've heard horror stories about Mexican food in Europe.

[–] couch1potato@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Mexicans do bastardize the cuisine of every other country (much like the US).

For example, most sushi rolls come with cream cheese in them. You have to ask for your roll without cream cheese.

However, there is also tons more delicious food to find here (also like the US).

Typing from tijuana.

Mexicans do bastardize the cuisine of every other country

And that's a good thing, it got you the trompo and al pastor.

[–] couch1potato@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Interesting, I'm not that familiar with the history. I'm from the US living here. But al pastor is delicious (adobada here in tijuana).

[–] Bloomcole@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

Came from Lebanese immigrants,, now a regular fast food.
Obviously they didn't use pork but lamb (like the pita/shoarma we got to know in Europe) but Mexicans love their pork.

[–] Bloomcole@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

The last years we have some real Mexicans opening restaurants here (Belgium) which are OC good.
But I had to learn to cook it myself (you can buy/order all the ingredients) since I couldn't wait until it started getting popular.
There is however one French chain OTacos which, opened here and it's a crime against Mexican food.
The Mexicans should open a court case for reputation dammage.

Turkish Kapsolon pancake

Sir, being turkish AND having enjoyed the Turko-Dutch dish Kapsolon I demand satisfaction. Kapsolon is basically döner with Edam/Gouda/Dutch cheese, making it a fusion dish made by immigrants using local ingredients, you can get fucked if it's not döner and doesn't have cheese on it.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Kapsalon also has fries underneath the döner. So if it isn’t a pancake topped with fries, döner and cheese it ain’t a Kapsalon pancake.

[–] Prime_Minister_Keyes@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I feel like the "Swedish" pancake should be a LOT cheaper.

But first, we need to talk about parallel universes...

[–] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

This comment really misaligns my QPUs

[–] anothercatgirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 months ago

Because pizza liquifies during cooking, the chef forgot to contain the liquid.

[–] jan_Melisa055@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 months ago

The original Minion didn't melt. They were launched to a parallel universe.

[–] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

As a German/English bilingual speaker who doesn't live in Europe. Dutch will never not be a really weird German/English hybrid in my mind.
