It’s not lost on me that they gave her the surname of “Monet” to muddy the waters around Janelle Monet, an R&B artist so deserving that even I know her name

[–] hummy_bee@mander.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

Doubling down on Victoria Monet too...

Wtf does "number one most added at a US radio format" mean? It seems completely nonsensical.

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

It means they try to shove it down our throats hard?

AI generated artist

No

It's not an artist, it's a computer program. More to the point, it's a distance measuring type database whose input was the hard work, sweat and tears from real human beings and whose output is a mix of that but lower quality

There is nothing new, nothing inspiring, nothing renewing, it's just as if they took all historical songs and tusees them in a blender and still filtered out the best bits that were left.

There is no singer that can awe you with her extreme vocal range, there is nothing that can touch you on your heart. This is pure ones and zeroes at work, all directed by some asshole who used some mathematical algorithms to figure out what sounds should be combined to make as much money as possible.

That is the crux of it: real artists work hard and mostly starve whilst giving you something from the heart. Managers and record companies would then make money off that (and keep most of it anyway). Now it's just the money makers and they can tune everything just to be the perfect money printer machine.

Over time, expect much, MUCH more of this and yes, real artists will likely mostly disappear because as always, a small group of people like us will protest this and reject it, but the big masses will just lap it up anyways

[–] Rooty@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

This is why it's important to patron and support artists.

[–] AstralPath@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I disagree that real artists will disappear. Rather I believe that the underground will be more relevant than ever.

And so much deeper underground

All genres are infested with AI generated slop. This is not a race thing or whatever he’s claiming. Did he forget that a couple of months ago the ai rock band Velvet Sundown with fake white dudes was all over the news. Or does it only matter to him when it affects black artists?

[–] andyburke@fedia.io 33 points 4 days ago

Not sure, but you didn't use this moment to frame this as more people joining the fight. Instead it sounds petty. 🤷‍♂️

AI slop sucks. The more people thar realize that, the better. Humans are fallible, but I will take them realizing there's a problem once they see it.

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 days ago

Don't punish the behaviour you want to see.

They realised the problem with AI. This is a good thing.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

You posted this while I was typing a reply and it's funny how similar our comments are lol

[–] Auth@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

does it only matter to him when it affects black artists

Yes they're racist

[–] Rooty@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

Companies are free to pump as much money into slop pipelines, and I am also free to ignore and block their shit wherever I can. In fact, this only gives me an incentive to support live venues and local performers.

[–] turdcollector69@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Who's claiming R&B isn't profitable? Is there a famous quote or some context I'm missing?

[–] Fontasia@feddit.nl 7 points 3 days ago

Country isn't ready for this

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 27 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not even close to the first Suno-generated "artist" to do well on streaming and this one was generated by a black woman so I'm not sure what it has to do with the industry being racist

Good example of someone who wasn't paying attention to an issue until it affected them

"you're just being alarmist and hyperbolic, that would never happen" -Nearly everyone around me, for the last decade or so

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (2 children)

First they came for AI country music, but I did not speak out because I was not a country fan

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How did they manage AI slop before AI was a thing, i wonder?

[–] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 3 days ago

I think it was by rigid adherence to what producers/record companies were demanding. If I ever hear another snap-snap-clap backing, it will be too soon.

[–] msage@programming.dev 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I did not speak out cause it all sounds the same?

There are many genres that have been mostly the same shit all over again for decades.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Every genre is homogenous if your only exposure to is "the hits"

[–] SaraTonin@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

The first AI band that I was aware of was The Velvet Sundown, which made the news for doing well on Spotify before people realised that they weren‘t real. They‘re very MOR AOR type stuff, at least from what I‘ve heard.

[–] primrosepathspeedrun@anarchist.nexus 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Slop. Any company that throws slop at us like this should be remembered.

[–] derry@midwest.social 3 points 3 days ago

Remember payola in the radio business? Pepperidge farm remembers

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Here is the song if anyone is interested : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nWRysTT_PF0&t=73s&pp=2AFJkAIB

Not really my style but it feels like a bunch of tropes rolled into one. Shame because AI can kind of let you push boundaries but this is musically and lyrically just very tame. Simply boring imo.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

jfc those have to be bot comments on that video, right?

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

There are some reaction videos too which seem even worse. Fact is though, the general population doesn't care how their entertainment is made, as long as it entertains them.

[–] Aqarius@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Dead internet.
