What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in unrelated arguments.

Brigading — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from voting, commenting or manipulating the post in any way, this includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be permanently banned.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

"By nature of the Fediverse, chuds will make their own space"

They're so close to self-awareness

[–] ozymandias@sh.itjust.works 33 points 6 days ago

self-awarewolves

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago

No chance. They would self harm if they ever achieved it.

Lol if you're not defending communist dictators, you're fascist?

They truly are missing a few screws.

There is one reason I'm here and one reason alone. And that is because Lemmy.ml and allied instances refuse to allow open discussion and criticism of their ideas there. So we have to find another space for it. I suspect I'm not alone.

Want to decrease the popularity of this community? Stop enforcing wrongthink and allow people to discuss your ideas openly. I guarantee you this com would quickly dwindle.

[–] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 19 points 6 days ago

That's exactly it. I disagree with a lot of people in this community. I also disagree with a lot of people on lemmy.ml and the like. The difference is that here at least I can disagree without immediately being banned. It's great that the fediverse allows diversity of thought between different instances, but internally each instance is structured as its own little fiefdom, and lemmy.ml has some questionable leadership.

Sad that MotG is active and popular?

That's like a republican being upset that Leopards Ate My Face is too busy.

Do they not understand how the material is generated?

"Cryptofash", "fashy" 🤔

Feels like bastardizations of already bastardized words, and I wonder if they're using it to try to sound impactful while not saying much.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 36 points 6 days ago (6 children)

Ah yes, of course the people who would have been allies with the Nazis up until the moment Hitler ate their face, the people who looked at Project 2025 and said "still better than Kamala though", the people supporting extreme authoritarianism and proving horsehoe theory correct... those people want to throw the word "fascist" around 🤣

[–] illi@piefed.social 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I hate it because all they achieved is making the word mean nothing. I everyone is calling the other fascist, then it is that much harder to call out actual fascists.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I definitely get what you mean, but I still don't have trouble calling it how it is

[–] illi@piefed.social 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don't mean it's hard to actually say it - but the word gets diluted. And when yo do call out a fascist, it may not carry the weught it should because it is used by tankies or actual fascists as a word for someone who disagrees with them.

Some of the worst tankies on Threadi (that lack humanity and behave in the most regressive way possible) in that screenshot.

Also funny how US-centric they are with their use of chud terminology. The vile pro-authoritarians can't even imagine a world outside of their US-style fake commie online roleplay.

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 23 points 6 days ago (5 children)

Talkies worship imperialism, the ultimate expression of the ends justifying means, so it makes sense they'd also be snide cultural imperialists without realizing it. I also really think a lot of them would be improved by being extracted from their basements and set to some yard work

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 11 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Hell, I'd bet just doing their own laundry and giving their moms a break would make them better people.

Cowbee said something right for once.

Except they don't understand that they are the chuds who have created their own safe spaces.

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (3 children)

You have been banned from the DPRK. Glorious leader has spoken.

Cowbee loves to act like he's not in an echo chamber. All the tankies like him are just currently unemployed dictators. They're like the people who simp for billionaires...just they do it hoping that they'll be in charge when "communism" comes around.

I'd prefer it if it were possible to kick these chuds off the fediverse entirely

And they still don't see who they are...

"We must forcibly suppress the people who say we're authoritarian"

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 29 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 33 points 6 days ago

also apparently like one post every few days is considered popular by tankie standards. geez dude

[–] Glide@lemmy.ca 26 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh lord. And I thought the right wing chuds were kings of projection. These people genuinely live in an alternate reality. It's equal parts fascinating, sad, and disturbing.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 28 points 6 days ago (2 children)

That's their secret. They're also right-wingers.

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 14 points 6 days ago (5 children)

So far left, they're right. Bizzaro Centrists.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 23 points 6 days ago

I think it's more that a genuinely leftist movement in Russia was captured and subjugated by authoritarians and they spent 70 years muddying the waters about what leftism means with their powerful propaganda.

I do share a concern with these comments though. I never comment here, but I do like laughing at tankie's bullshit sometimes. However, these types of spaces are very easy and often prone to right-wing infiltration. And they can slowly but surely turn into a Nazi bar, and I think this is something to look out for.

Again, I've never comment around here, and I don't always check the comments. I'm not too familiar with the community, but I have seen some concerning things here and there. And in general lately I feel like Lemmy has taken a more centrist right-wing bend. I think we've had another influx from Reddit. I'm not sure, but I am a bit concerned. I might just be overly concerned. Maybe it's my anxiety disorder at play again. Still, I think it's worth keeping an eye on.

I think there is more validity to this comment than is being given credit for, here.

[–] vonbaronhans@midwest.social 10 points 6 days ago (7 children)

If it helps, I don't think I've run across any obviously right wing comments on Lemmy in a long time, at least not any that haven't been ratioed to hell and back.

Another fun story is c/conservative. It was started by a conservative, iirc, and for reasons I can't fully recall, is now modded by leftists, and the whole community's purpose is calling out conservative nonsense.

The social fabric of Lemmy seems to be very anti-conservative, which is really refreshing for me, at least.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

There's a small group of con chuds over at maga place these days, but they don't seem to be growing for now.

Before them there was one acct I forget right now who was a self declared con, but I don't think I've seen his name pop up in a couple months. It's lonely on the outskirts of reason when there's no one else to support your delusions

commenting specifically so tankies label me “fashy” while they actively defend dictatorships.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'd prefer it if it were possible to kick these chuds off the fediverse entirely.
