Yeah, having a friend that I clearly can't just say "it wasn't that funny to me, but I'm glad you liked it" and have it be okay.

I thought shit posts were supposed to be funny, this is just sad.

[–] Jinarched@lemmy.ca 71 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

Showing a video you genuinely find funny to your best hommie just to be forced to watch him obviously pretending to laugh for two minutes.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 16 points 20 hours ago

I learnt to never do this, as I realized I hate when they do it to me. I just send the link and they can watch it when they want

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 10 points 21 hours ago

Even better when they're pretending to laugh when you're showing them a sad video

[–] Korne127@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

This is why I wanted to answer

Childhood cancer is probably a close second

[–] xkbx@startrek.website 15 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

yeah I hate having to force laughter at childhood cancer

So apparently telling your friend or acquaintance you don't share their particular sense of humour is worse?

I guess I shouldn't overthink a shitpost, but is it really such a social faux pas to tell someone your tastes are different from theirs? I just wonder if this is a cultural thing that I'm too Dutch to get, or if it's more of a I'm-too-socially-awkward-to-have-an-opinion-of-my-own kind of thing?

Might perhaps be your father who otherwise gets mad at you for rest of the day, and you still get uncomfortable from whatever shit he says even though it objectively isn't anything more than a bunch of crap.
You know, like when he notices you aren't absolutely rolling with laughter:

(While full-force tapping back button on his phone) OK, you don't have to pretend like you care

"I just..."

Leave me alone! You won't even watch anything with me. Am I really that bad? I must be worse than Hitler. All I ever wanted was to have a family, but I guess I wanted too much. FUCK! What did I do to deserve this? I was growing up with a father who beat me and never cared about me. Perhaps I should have been like that, and then you would've liked me.

(Yelling at dog) Get away from me! You don't have to pretend to like me either.

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 21 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Just forward the video. Then they can type "lol" without having to watch it.

[–] _druid@sh.itjust.works 12 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Never be the person showing memes at the party.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Try to imagine a party where phones aren't allowed.

No one taking pictures or video, everyone talking to each other in the moment, just for the moment, just for each other.

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 6 points 19 hours ago

Our very own John Lennon

[–] VeganBtw@piefed.social 2 points 20 hours ago

I remember. When they didn't have their phone, they often smoked or drank beer. Try to find friends that can party sober and be present, it's the best.

[–] hayvan@piefed.world 10 points 21 hours ago

Having to watch an ad first.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social 7 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Allow me to introduce you to:

Friend that sends 3+ min voice messages in a group chat and ask for feedback about it.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 17 hours ago

That’s an insane thing to do lawl. If someone sends me a voice message in a text thread, I just say β€œyou gotta type that out!”

[–] callouscomic@lemmy.zip 8 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Having someone in your life that cares and is comfortable enough to share their interests and joy with you?

So horrible.

Yes, I know where this was posted.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 17 hours ago

NOOO its a shitppstttt that means nobody should habe anything to say or think about it!! You just don't get it.. Its not that serious man

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 16 hours ago

Watching a friend show a video of children and having to pretend to be amused

[–] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 6 points 21 hours ago

When the toddler watches your eyes for half the time. "Watch! You're not looking!"

[–] ogeist@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

I do this to my family, probably I should stop... I won't though. 🫢

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 2 points 20 hours ago

I am low vision so I can't see a phone unless it's nice and close.

This fact has saved me from many of these situations. If they are extra insistent I tell them to send me the link and reply with a laugh emoji as is expected in our culture.

[–] MacaqueAndCheese@lemmy.ca 2 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

It's this what youngsters do these days instead of cocaine?

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 19 hours ago

They rack up the lines off the phone as the video is playing

[–] Opisek@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 20 hours ago

What do you mean instead?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 20 hours ago

Yeah. Complaining about it to strangers.

[–] iamericandre@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

This has the same energy of being around a group of close friends that you’re not particularly close with and they’re all laughing about some inside joke that only the group can understand and I’m just like wtf this is not even remotely funny

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world -1 points 17 hours ago

Being forced to watch a 3 minute video, obviously.
