Assuming Fields is back next week, he will have to face some pretty good defenses. First number is team defense by total yards given up and the second number is team defense by passing yards given up.

Detroit #9/#20 Minnesota #13/#16 Detroit #9/#20 Cleveland #1/#1 Atlanta #8/#10 Arizona #22/#11 Green Bay #11/#7

Detroit will be a tough match up because they have pass rushers, good run D, and will be playing with the lead most likely.

Minnesota's aggressive blitzing gave Fields trouble.

Cleveland is the toughest defense the Bears will play all year.

Atlanta and Green Bay have top 10 pass defense and Arizona is #11 in pass defense.

Fields best chance to put up a good performance will be next week against Detroit but we still don't know how healed his thumb is yet. After the 2 Detroit games it's a rough 4 games to close out the season.

Good, he needs to prove it.

[–] AdStreet2074@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (5 children)

Looks like the excuses is ready when he throws for 50 yards in the first half again

[–] jheidenr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (4 children)

I don’t understand it. Hasn’t fields started over 30 games? Why is now going to be different? Was the problem his thumb was not dislocated?

[–] SD40couple@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s always something. If this excuse comes out then I guess the answer is he is just a bum slayer and sucks vs good teams.

[–] Yossarian216@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Caleb Williams seems to have a bit of that, it’s made me nervous about drafting him.

[–] thereal_et@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It won’t be different

[–] PraiseBeToScience@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because young QBs develop and can break out. Development isn't linear. This isn't new.

[–] Draker-X@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Fields is going to end up like Henry Rowengartner after the broken arm. His newly-fixed thumb now provides him perfect spin and pinpoint accuracy on every throw.

[–] chistoolie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well. He might show flashes. And if he shows flashes, he deserves a 4th and 5th season.

[–] luckynug@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Listen I’m a Fields support but even I can’t buy “flashes earn a 4th and 5th year.” I think he is on this team next year one way or another. After that it’s anyone guess.

[–] DontYouHatePants6969@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He is the only qb in nfl history who has to play any tough defenses, cut him a break in advance!

These people with Fields derangement syndrome will try any excuse.

[–] DexNihilo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Mysteriously the offensive line will suddenly play like trash, and it'll be obvious no QB in the world could possibly complete a pass behind them. Omg!!! Why didn't Poles address the line????

[–] mest08@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The oline hasn't been healthy in any of Fields starts this year. Hell, Whitehair sucked so bad against MN, he was benched as soon as Bagent came in. He should have been benched much earlier. I can't predict how Fields will play with the oline cooking, but I certainly like his chances to do well with Jones, Jenkins, Patrick, Davis and Wright compared to the shit he had to deal with.

[–] Understdy-evrything@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This is such an excuse, smh.

WRs will stop getting separation, Getsy will obviously be calling the worst play calls ever, and flus will mismanage the game.

Fields will have ever excuse in the books for the remainder of his tenure with the bears. Once, like Mitch, he goes to another team and continues his poor play maybe people will learn he’s just not it. Sucks, I wanted him to be so bad but damn, he’s so f’n inconsistent and not a true passer

[–] SgtBalzac@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I love how this fanbase hates their QBs — Bagent has been mediocre at best. Fields has been good at best. You all want another QB in the draft so you can build him up and tear him down too when the organization fails him like it’s failed everyone before them. Time is a flat circle and this organization and fanbase will be in a constant cycle of fuck you.

[–] GoombaStoppingHoes@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I will not discuss a new QB talk till the season finishes, I feel its the utmost respect to give to someone who could potentially be gone this off-season. Fields will get my full support, however, let it be clear there is no room for excuses. He's facing top defenses? Good, that's who I want to see him perform against for me to feel confident in giving him another year potentially. Murray came back from ACL injury and dished out 200+ passing yards and won a game with a coaching staff that most cardinals fans dislike. He has 7 games and it'll be tough to win over the front office and fans if they are out on him, but if he's the guy he should be able to overcome the tough battle ahead of him. I hope he does because then we can use our picks elsewhere, Justin Fields these last games are your final shots at convincing some of doubtful people that are willing to give you one last shot that you are our guy. Make them all count!

[–] rugbysecondrow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

All of this. If Bagent, an UDFA, can win 2 games and be a .500 QB, then sure as shit Fields should perform much better than he has.

If he wants to be the man, then he has to step up and be the man.

[–] Mrllamajones@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He didn't win two games. He was a part of two winning games. He didn't do shit to help win the second game other than that end of game throw to Mooney to end it

[–] Puzzleheaded-Ear9487@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Thank you for a reasonable post. The whole deal this year was “let’s see if Fields can prove it.”

Anytime you say you want to give Fields the full year they act like you’re a naive idiot because they want one of the other QBs.

I do think Fields still has a lot to prove but if Fields can show he can play at a top 15 QB level, you keep him and use those picks to really stack other positions (which you’d be able to!)

[–] OpneFall@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Top 10 really, because you can't extend a guy who peaked at Top 15.

Sounds like a good approach for a coach in a press conference, but you're a random person on Reddit and nobody cares what you say.

[–] GripenHater@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That’ll make it even cooler when he wins out and we go to the Super Bowl

[–] Suddenly_Elmo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That averages out to the 12th strongest passing defense. Somewhat better than average for sure but it's not like he's facing all top 10 teams

[–] hepatitisC@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I mean 4 of the games are against top 10 defenses so that's a majority of them lol

[–] Suddenly_Elmo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

yeah but only 3 against top 10 passing defenses

[–] CNfor3@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Good QBs need to play well against good defenses. It’s year 3 now, he either lives up to the expectations or he’s not the guy it’s as simple as that

[–] UnMapacheGordo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Exactly. The best scenario is that Fields lights it up to MVP levels and makes the first round extremely less foggy.

I would not put money on it but root for it since that’s the best thing for the Bears.

[–] alucryts@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah I'm just gunna root for the bears and let the QB dust settle after the season. Idc who is throwing I'm just going to enjoy football while its here.

Looks like were either going to have our pick of a draft qb (thanks panthers) or the option to build around fields with high end talent.

Options. Options are good.

[–] Subby13@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

My only question today is will Fields-over-Stroud be worse than Trubisky-over-Mahomes?

Make no mistake, that's what happened. The front office had a shot at Stroud, scouted him, and decided to trade the pick and keep Fields.

And no, an NFL fan with a brain doesn't want Wright + Moore + Caleb Williams/Drake Maye over a high-character, top-7 QB in the first year of his rookie deal. Call the Texans today and offer them that package for Stroud and get laughed off the phone.

[–] OpneFall@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I am surprised that more people aren't pissed about this yet, and the only reason I can think of is that the Bears traded for what is the current #1 pick. If that doesn't hold, and stroud leads Houston to playoffs or something, I expect the heat is going to be turned up.

[–] Subby13@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Fair, but that also assumes you can get even close to Stroud in Williams or Maye, which is profoundly unlikely.

A top-7 QB in the first year of his rookie deal is probably the most valuable commodity in any sport. Moore and Wright are worthless without a QB. You’re so much better off with an elite QB and a middling line and weapons than Vice-versa.

Poles blew it and fans should be absolutely furious.

Nature and nurture.

I think it is a myth that when draft a QB, success or failure is already predetermined at that point you either made a huge mistake or or you caught lightning in a bottle. Sure... you need to have a prospect that crosses a threshold of skills and traits in order to have a future in the NFL. I don't care how good of a blocker someone was in college, if the guy weighs 240 lbs, is 6'1 and has 28" arms, he's probably not going to cut it as an NFL OT. You are drafting potential and it is up to you to put resources into developing it, finding the compatible playbook, compatible players, nurturing the culture, and even getting lucky with injuries for that player to meet that potential.

With Stroud, the Texans probably are not only enjoying the skills and traits he brought to the table, but they also did a bunch of other things right to get this outcome. They got the nurture right too.

I don't know how often we got the "nature" part right... but we sure as hell never get the "nurture" part right. And until we start investing in the "nurture" it won't matter if we hit on the "nature." Personally, I think Fields was the closest we ever came to hitting on the "nature"... the kid has one big flaw, he holds the ball too long. Other than that he was very productive in college, has plus arm strength, is accurate down field, is historically good at running for a QB, is reportedly the hardest worker on the team and a respected leader. Whether anyone thinks he's "it" or not, I think everyone understands that we did a dog shit job developing him. And I don't want to marginalize his flaw. I think it can be corrected, but that doesn't mean it WILL be corrected, and it is a pretty bad flaw. It leads to sacks, fumbles and injuries, and each of those outcomes lead to losses for the team.

We'll see how Fields ends the season. If it ends with a whisper, we'll be starting over. But HOPEFULLY we start giving a fuck about developing a QB and putting in a system around him that bridges him to his potential. If it ends with a bang, we better be investing in players and systems that further enhance what he can do.

[–] FinancialTwo4205@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Even if he turns into Mahomes, they are taking a QB no matter what. Hopefully Fields can succeed elsewhere.

[–] StewPidaz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's really unfortunate. I think at the very least the two games Bagent won, Fields would have been great in too.

[–] GarrettFischer1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Why is it unfortunate? This is the best situation. Let’s see how he plays against competent teams. IDGAF if he throws for 4 TDs against trash. Lets see if he can play, this is truly his last shot

We are very likely going to lose the next 4 games. I fully expect Detroit to show us that our "improved defense" really isn't that improved.

It's evident Justin will not be the starting QB next season. He simply has not been consistent

Minnesota, Atlanta, Arizona, and Green Bay should all be competitive games.

I don't have much hope for the others, but we still need to see something instead of blowouts in those.

[–] robtedesco@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think the two Detroit games will be interesting/telling. Lions are a great team, talented, well-coached, putting up Ws... but capable offenses can move the ball on them. Chargers just dropped 41, a few weeks before that the Ravens blew them out 38-6, Seattle put up 37 on them earlier this season.

Are we capable or not? We shall see. We've got the whole rest of the year to gain information, but especially given a division opponent we get to play twice, I'm really interested in how both these games go, for our staff and personnel.

[–] debar11@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Good. It’s the best way to conduct a fair evaluation of him.

[–] delightfuldinosaur@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

3-4 of these upcoming games are absolutely winnable.

The next two weeks are going to be brutal though.

[–] GarrettFischer1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Him playing good defenses is the best thing possible for the bears. Let’s see how he plays. Worst situation would be playing garbage for the rest of the year where he fools us

[–] ScotchyLatchi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The O Line has shown big signs of improvement since fields has been out. It’s Fields time to prove it because he will be getting some time to throw the ball.

[–] Lysol20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is what I want. I want to see him playing against good defenses and playing well against them. I'm not sure how he pulls that off though. You don't learn how to get the ball out and pick up on blitzes and secondary schemes in the matter of a few weeks. But he is fighting for his NFL career, so we will see how he is with the back to the wall.

[–] BurgerBob1010@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Good. Wouldn't want it any other way. There is no better method of proving whether this guy is a future starter than seeing how he performs in do or die situations against great defenses. Because after all, thats what a playoff game is.

Edit: grammar

[–] Zealousideal_Bass199@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Detroit just ate 38 against the chargers, they’re not great defensively.

[–] Thumbkeeper@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

We are a league last place team. The whole path was tough.

[–] FrankieLyrical@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is the most ideal situation. I'd much rather him play tough competition the rest of the way to leave zero doubt one way or another vs him playing lollipop defenses.

The Bears may be drafting a new QB regardless, but if Fields balls out that will make his trade value rise.
