Can't find clean drinking water, just cut back... Brought to you by the ruling class who is using up and poisoning all the water.

It has some grains of truth but it's mingled with too much personal opinion.

There are studies on how much water humans really need. If you want to calculate it the scientific way, you need to factor in at least lean muscle mass, total mass, surface area, ambient temperature and humidity, activity levels, and diet. There's no magic number of ounces that's correct for everyone.

Fortunately we've evolved a really awesome mechanism. When your body needs more water, you get thirsty.

So if you want to stay properly hydrated, drink whenever you feel even a little thirsty.

Yeaaahhh....About that...

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

ADHD can make you completely ignore that signal for way, way too long.

My body also misinterprets that signal as "hunger", and a craving for some wet food. Maybe like yogurt or a cup of pudding. You know something that just slides down easy. Yeah #thisiswhyimfat.

Yep...
Take my meds and of to the race on one cup of tea at the morning.
Sometimes I will remember the bottle of water on my table in front of my monitors at work. Sometimes.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Me too. Sometimes I feel like I must get thirsty in a reasonable way, but when I actually notice the sensation is another matter. At other times I'm incessantly thirsty.

[–] ironpangolin29@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 days ago

We can seperate regions easily enough and their peak humidity seasons. You just need to factor in sedentary, semi active, active and athletic lifestyles.

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago

After about 23C I swear a lot. I definitely need to replenish what I lose or I get drowsy

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 14 points 6 days ago

I could say the same to the data centers. They got to lay off the water bro.

Over-hydrating doesn't help, but under-hydrating sure does.

If you're pee is light yellow ya doin' fine.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If you're pee... you are not doing fine.

Article sponsored by Pepsi?

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Dear OP,
You've posted an image instead of linking to the article. I don't understand why everyone on Lemmy doesn't understand this is completely worthless.

It was also posted on MSN, so you can avoid the WSJ paywall.

It's clickbaity. The conclusion is pretty unexciting: for most people, all you need to do is drink water with food and when you get thirsty. Maybe this will help somebody who's over-obsessed with getting enough water, and it's impacting their quality of life? It really feels like they couldn't find anything good to write about, so they had to dredge this up.

NB: the conclusion includes this:

One caveat: Some researchers warn thirst can be delayed or reduced with age or certain medications.

Age or certain medications or certain medical conditions. I have ADHD, so I legit won't get thirsty 95% of the time. I have to have something to remind me to drink.

Dehydration has severe effects on your mental and physical health

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Do not, my friends, become addicted to water. It will take hold of you and you will resent its absence!

[–] exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 days ago

Water has the harshest withdrawal symptoms known to medical science.

[–] glitch1985@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

I've heard everybody who drinks water dies. That's not a risk I'm willing to take personally.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

In the water wars documentary, Holes, it was proven that children and young adults could work all day in the sun without any significant amount of water. Therefore your allocation of water will be limited further until morale improves. Woke unionized overpaid bureacrats just want to take all your money to waste water, instead of using that money for useful datacenters and more oil drilling.

Measuring liquid with mass units? Toddlerific

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

It seems to be an American thing. When I was in the US I was confused by all that drink cans are labeled in weight measurements rather than in liquid measurements. Although I guess it's the US so I should just be grateful that it wasn't been measured in fractions of a corgi or something.

[–] derfunkatron@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

8 fluid ounces is a cup, 4 cups is a quart, 4 quarts is a gallon. Most canned drinks are 12 fl. oz, or 3/4 of a pint.

8 ounces is half a pound.

It makes perfect sense!

A fluid ounce is a unit of volume.

[–] notSys@lemmy.cafe 4 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Has the author considered: construction workers

[–] nul42@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 days ago

The spice must flow.

You should be drinking 3 liters per day. 40oz is about 1. You should carry those bottles with you all day, and fill it 3 times.

[–] dan69@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Start doubling your intake now!!

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago

40 ounces is like 1 litre, that's not a huge water bottle, it's a water bottle you clamshell.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Do you want kidney stones? Because this is how you get kidney stones.
