A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Countless AI slop channels are relentlessly copying our work. So one day we decided: enough is enough. We went undercover to investigate who’s behind them and what this flood of AI slop means for the future of educational content on YouTube.

Pretty much every short is AI slop lol.

With a dozen comments from Boomers saying how inspiring/cute/infuriating/etc. the video is.

[–] SchittDickerson@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Tbh, they're probably bots too

[–] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

I'm sure some of them are, but we'll never know the exact percentage.

[–] mattreb@feddit.it 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

tbh the last video I've watched from fern was basically an undisclosed 15min mc donalds advertisement... I don't known how much educational the channel is after it got sold

[–] nullroot@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

For real. I had to unsubscribe. They've become quite the content mill and so has veritasium. Seems super disingenuous like oh woe my venture capital investment isn't paying off, how could you do this to us?

[–] zqps@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

Hmm. I've been keeping an eye on Veritasium's output due to the news. All I can really complain about is that some individual videos are sub-par, which has always been the case especially when you have to branch out eventually, and some stories were essentially handed to them by someone else - but they're upfront about it and still do the legwork to justify making their own video on the matter.

So because I like to be critical of the media I consume, I'm genuinely curious: What pattern do you see that justifies calling them a content mill?

fern sold out to private equity a while back

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I've noticed and hate it. I keep getting things recommended to me that claim to be Prof Brian Cox explaining something interesting and if it's not fake, it's some interview I've already heard from someone else's podcast that the channel owner stole and threw AI on top of. I cannot figure out how to stop this from happening; YouTube does not make it easy to block channels on its smart TV clients

The Death of Education~~al~~ is really the big picture that you're witnessing. Having worked in education, this isn't just AI. Even Auto-Correct and spelling correction really dumbed kids down. Reading levels are... So you switch to videos and now you get slop videos. So incorrect and potentially dangerous videos are the next bane. At this point students should have classes on how to identify AI slop.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i would argue identifying AI slop is just an extension of teaching kids critical thinking and reasoning skills

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That needs to happen more than generic rudimentary testing.

Remember Academic Earth and YouTube EDU before the change? I 'member

[–] SmoothOperator@lemmy.world 87 points 2 days ago (11 children)

Just to be clear, Kurzgesagt is not using AI, but being copied by AI slop.

Kids! Fuck this bullshit and go meet up at the library. You don't need these ruthless tech corporations trying so hard to limit your options of what your future should be.

[–] Sektor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

But kids' dad works in the corporation. He just wants to earn a living for the kids.

What it means for me is I find a Youtuber I like and cling to them for dear life. It also means if I really do want to learn something, I'll find a better source than youtube--like a podcast specializing in that subject area, or even, dare I say, a book.

The moment I realize a video is AI written (it's pretty easy to tell once you notice the way they tend to go) I blacklist the channel.

I love fern and feel bad for them being so good it’s detrimental. I hope they find a solution

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 50 points 2 days ago (11 children)

Losing Varitasium has sucked. It was gradual and I wanted to give the new videos a fair shake but that shit has gotten so artless.

Weren't Fern and Veritasium bought by private equity?

[–] tangeli@piefed.social 23 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I don't know about Fern but I just this week saw an interview with Derek: The Real Reason Veritasium Sold His Channel. It's really interesting review of the history of Veritasium, from the beginning. He still has some ownership, but less than 50%. Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall him saying who the investors were.
