Leftists: community solidarity is the foundation of mass politics! people are social creatures! capitalism isolates us and keeps us weak!

Also leftists: I have not left my room in two weeks.

[–] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 51 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I don't think that's leftists in general honestly that's really a Hexbear thing. I don't really know why but HB really seems to have primarily retained people who don't have friends and smoke weed and play video games. This is the only left space I've seen where if you suggest it's your responsibility as a leftist to organize in person with real people you get called ableist.

[–] fox@hexbear.net 30 points 2 years ago

It's because the original community was founded on the principle of all listening to the same irony-poisoned podcast hosted by people that love weed and hate going outside.

For me it's not socializing with my neighbors much, other than some short small talk as we pass each other on the street. Though I do feel like a hypocrite when I talk about community solidarity when I barely know the people who literally live next door to me. Social anxiety is a motherfucker.

Veganism isn't really that big of a debate on here. People are either vegan or not vegan. As long as people aren't being disrespectful assholes in areas where they shouldn't (someone posting recipes on /c/food with a meat CW, /c/vegan, ect.) I really don't see much fighting over it.

Should have started the WFPB discourse instead, people over here get really heated over cooking oils. Going anti-cooking oil would be a hilarious piece of bait

[–] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Vegans not knowing oils kinda blows my mind. Strategic use of oils and spices can make just about any vegetable shine.

individualized consumer action, the missing piece for overthrowing capitalism!!!11!!

[–] aaro@hexbear.net 26 points 2 years ago (2 children)

screaming "THERE IS NO ETHICAL CONSUMPTION UNDER CAPITALISM!!!" while snowshoveling mountains of Wendy's™ Double Baconator Deluxes into the bed of my diesel Ford™ F-350 extended cab

I'm not even a committed vegan, but if you don't buy the bacon, the grocery store takes a little longer to re-stock the bacon, the slaughterhouse breeds one less pig, and there's less suffering in the world. Responsible consumer habits make a difference, just not enough to overthrow capitalism. Even just a couple days a week of no meat by one single individual reduces the number of animals killed substantially. http://environmath.org/2020/09/08/just-how-many-animals-do-americans-eat-and-how-many-would-you-save-by-going-meatless-one-day-a-week/

If it helps, don't buy the bacon because the capitalists will make surplus value off the purchase.

[–] macerated_baby_presidents@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago (4 children)

As I've learned more about capitalism, I've been less enthusiastic about market effects and paying more attention to social effects. Being vegan or vegetarian is FAR more acceptable than it was a few years ago. One of my friends sought out my advice before going vegetarian and I think I provided a good example leading up to his decision. We're building groundwork for a movement; animal welfare activists made it socially unacceptable to wear fur, leading to less demand (and less tortured minks) and a number of countries outright banning fur farms.

Yea i dont think you would be able to change people's consumption in the same way you can convince them being fucked over by capitalism.

Meat exactly isn't a "luxury" good either. Even the poor in the global south occasionally consume meat. People don't have the same concern for animals (that arent considered pets) being abused and killed compared to humans.

I put it in a similar but not the same box as religion. I wish people were less braindead when it comes to certain aspects of religion. Idk how a person can be fucked over a million times and still believe that God is good and has their best interests in mind.

In Amerikkka it’s cheaper to get edible meat / carbs than it is to get edible vegetables

So weird. When I post any other moral demand of individual actions everyone just agrees with it! Veganism is absolutely unique in this respect, yessir!

I've been vegetarian all my life and I still find it extremely hard to give up dairy (due to economical, logistical, but, most importantly, palatability reasons). I can't imagine how difficult it must be for folks who've grown up on a meat-heavy diet.

[–] booty@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I grew up on a meat-heavy diet. I literally just quit using animal products. It's literally so fucking easy. All you have to do is realize that you have absolutely no right to take part in the wide-scale murder of trillions of innocent creatures. When you actually internalize that you just stop.

Its easier if your parents were terrible at cooking. I haven't gone full veg/vegan but I find it incredibly easy to avoid meat if i'm eating at home. Restaurants are another matter.
