Rockstar co-founder compares AI to 'mad cow disease,' and says the execs pushing it aren't 'fully-rounded humans'
Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser—freed from the mysterious and press-sceptical chains of his former company—has once again manifested on a podcast.
Houser popped up on Virgin Radio UK to chat with host Chris Evans (not that Chris Evans) about his new book.
So it's sort of like when we fed cows with cows and got mad cow disease."
Houser's a little more damning in his assessment of the breathless execs currently pushing AI like the second coming.
"Humanity is being pulled in a direction by a certain group of people, who maybe aren't fully-rounded humans," Houser told Virgin Radio. 🖊️️🤖

Community name changed, but “c/steamdeck” is fixed. Most want to include new Steam hardware now, as the fediverse isn’t large enough for separate communities yet. We can revisit separation later if needed. Feedback welcome.

64GB Steam Deck (only option available locally due to no official sales). Planning a 512GB SD card for COD Zombies, Deep Rock Galactic, Fallout 76. Will the SD card cause performance issues, or is 64GB sufficient? Avoiding scalpers for larger models due to scam risk.

Revisiting Jill of the Jungle, the last game Tim Sweeney designed
C:\ArsGames We love games here at the Ars Orbiting HQ, from modern to ancient and all points in between.
Regardless, GOG will have a DRM-free version of the game ready to go.
Epic MegaGames’ Jill of the Jungle illustrates that as well as any other title from the era.
Designed and programmed by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, the game was meant to prove that console-style games of the original Nintendo era could work just as well on PCs.
Also, it had a female protagonist, which Sweeney saw as a notable differentiator at the time. 🖊️️🤖

I didn't have much experience with Commodore 64 games. What can you recommend?
There are three retro games that I truly love - SuperFrog, Lotus 2, and Cannon Fodder. All are for Amiga computer but for right now I'm looking for something cool that I can play on my C64 :)

Blue Hedgehog, Meet Boing Ball: Can Sonic Run On Amiga?
The Amiga was a great game system in its day, but there were some titles it was just never going to get.
Sonic the Hedgehog was one of them– SEGA would never in a million years been willing to port its flagship platformer to another system.
Well, SEGA might not in a million years, but [reassembler] has started that process after only thirty four.
Once this port is done, that toolkit should really grease the wheels of bringing other Mega Drive titles over.
It should be noted that since the Mega Drive was a 64 colour machine, [reassembler] is targeting the A1200 for his Sonic port, at least to start. 🖊️️🤖

Region-Locked PS6 Consoles Not Outside the Realm of Possibility
The possibility of Sony considering region-locked PS6 consoles has increased following the recent announcement of a language-locked PS5.
Why Sony might consider region-locked PS6 consolesI’m in my late 30s, so I have memories of region-locked products from my childhood.
When it comes to console gaming, these region locks gradually became a thing of the past.
Turkiye’s Lira, which has been in freefall, has seen PS5 games become almost unaffordable on the country’s PS Store.
Depending on how the market responds to the new Japan-only PS5, I have a strong feeling that Sony will consider region/language-locked PS6 consoles. 🖊️️🤖

Inside Atari DOS
Inside Atari DOS is a book, published by Compute!
This took up too much RAM on these RAM-starved early computers, so the design was quickly changed for Atari DOS 2.
I made a simple utility that can show you the contents of the disk by directly reading the disk directory, which you can download here:Download Atari Disk ViewerThere were many version of DOS available for the Atari, but they mostly used the same disk format and were backwards compatible with Atari DOS.

This represents the fourth time in 18 months that Microsoft Gaming has laid off workers.
However, Variety and several other outlets obtained a memo to Xbox employees from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer.
HR is working directly with impacted employees to provide severance plan benefits (aligned with local laws), including pay, healthcare coverage, and job placement resources to support their transition.
Microsoft has laid off thousands upon thousands of workers over the last 18 months, including 1,900 employees in January 2024.
