Fallout co-creator Tim Cain says today's games suffer from trying 'to be everything for everyone' when they should be learning from '80s games: 'These games were really focused, because they had to be

Today's games have forgotten the lessons of history, according to veteran RPG developer and Fallout co-creator Tim Cain. Today's games, Cain said, suffer from an identity crisis: "They don't really know what they want to be," he explained. Old games, he said, had a stronger focus—because they had no other choice. Lessons From Old Games - YouTube Watch OnWhen Cain says old games, he means old games. As a result, Cain says, '80s games avoided the danger of "becoming indulgent" like modern games have. 🖊️️🤖

The Sims' biggest sex mod creator says that around 300,000 people use it—that's more than some of Steam's top games: 'It doesn't make sense to me'

Despite its tame rating, sex has always wormed its way into The Sims series—I fear it's a canon event to Google "how to make Sims naked" as a teenager. (Image credit: Electronic Arts)WickedWhims is so popular, in fact, that its creator can't quite believe how many simmers are galavanting around their game with it. Turbodriver sat down with ROMchip last year to talk about his mod and just how many goddamn people are using it. "The number of people playing with WickedWhims is so big that I just can't even believe it." When asked how big, he said: "The numbers are so huge that I can't believe they're actually real. 🖊️️🤖

Tavern Keeper's item design tool is so good one player made a tabletop D&D set where you can actually read the stats on the character sheets

Something I didn't get too deeply into when I gushed about Tavern Keeper last week is its item design tool. Tavern Keeper also invites players to modify existing items or create their own with its in-game design tool and share them with other players. But the item design tool in Tavern Keeper is so flexible that players have been creating some shockingly imaginative stuff. If you open the design tool to inspect Jolle's D&D table you can zoom in even closer and see there's actually a ton of character info on those character sheets. You can find plenty more on the official Discord or the Tavern Keeper subreddit. 🖊️️🤖

Rockstar co-founder compares AI to 'mad cow disease,' and says the execs pushing it aren't 'fully-rounded humans'

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser—freed from the mysterious and press-sceptical chains of his former company—has once again manifested on a podcast. Houser popped up on Virgin Radio UK to chat with host Chris Evans (not that Chris Evans) about his new book. So it's sort of like when we fed cows with cows and got mad cow disease." Houser's a little more damning in his assessment of the breathless execs currently pushing AI like the second coming. "Humanity is being pulled in a direction by a certain group of people, who maybe aren't fully-rounded humans," Houser told Virgin Radio. 🖊️️🤖

C:\ArsGames We love games here at the Ars Orbiting HQ, from modern to ancient and all points in between. Regardless, GOG will have a DRM-free version of the game ready to go. Epic MegaGames’ Jill of the Jungle illustrates that as well as any other title from the era. Designed and programmed by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, the game was meant to prove that console-style games of the original Nintendo era could work just as well on PCs. Also, it had a female protagonist, which Sweeney saw as a notable differentiator at the time. 🖊️️🤖

Blue Hedgehog, Meet Boing Ball: Can Sonic Run On Amiga?

The Amiga was a great game system in its day, but there were some titles it was just never going to get. Sonic the Hedgehog was one of them– SEGA would never in a million years been willing to port its flagship platformer to another system. Well, SEGA might not in a million years, but [reassembler] has started that process after only thirty four. Once this port is done, that toolkit should really grease the wheels of bringing other Mega Drive titles over. It should be noted that since the Mega Drive was a 64 colour machine, [reassembler] is targeting the A1200 for his Sonic port, at least to start. 🖊️️🤖

Region-Locked PS6 Consoles Not Outside the Realm of Possibility

The possibility of Sony considering region-locked PS6 consoles has increased following the recent announcement of a language-locked PS5. Why Sony might consider region-locked PS6 consolesI’m in my late 30s, so I have memories of region-locked products from my childhood. When it comes to console gaming, these region locks gradually became a thing of the past. Turkiye’s Lira, which has been in freefall, has seen PS5 games become almost unaffordable on the country’s PS Store. Depending on how the market responds to the new Japan-only PS5, I have a strong feeling that Sony will consider region/language-locked PS6 consoles. 🖊️️🤖

However, Variety and several other outlets obtained a memo to Xbox employees from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. HR is working directly with impacted employees to provide severance plan benefits (aligned with local laws), including pay, healthcare coverage, and job placement resources to support their transition. Microsoft has laid off thousands upon thousands of workers over the last 18 months, including 1,900 employees in January 2024. According to the report, the number of impacted Blizzard employees could reach as high as 100, with the Overwatch team appearing to escape unscathed this time around. 🖊️️🤖

United argues 'window seat' does not mean 'seat with a window'

Photo: Krakenimages.com | stock.adobe.comPassengers say they paid seat-selection fees (commonly $30 to $100+) expecting a view, sunlight, or the comfort of a genuine window seat — and say they would not have booked or paid extra had they known the seat lacked a window. In effect, what United is arguing is that windows are not necessarily included in window seats. What the windowless window seat suits mean for the airline industryThe cases against United and Delta underscore growing scrutiny of ancillary-fee practices and how airlines market seat-selection products. How to ensure your window seat has a windowPassengers who want “window” seats with an actual window should first check the seat map in the airline’s reservation system before booking. Scientists Discover That People Act Way Better When Batman Is Present

No longer was everyone completely self-involved; with the presence of a superhero, commuters started helping each other more than they would’ve without him around. Batman showing up is just one — albeit striking — way of promoting what’s called “prosocial behavior,” or the act of helping others around you, via introducing an unexpected event, the researchers write. Over 67 percent of passengers offered their seats when Batman was present, compared to just over 37 percent when Batman wasn’t there. Most, in both cases, were women: 68 percent with Batman there, and 65 without him. In the study, he added the findings “could inform strategies to promote altruistic behaviors in daily life, from public art installations to innovative social campaigns. 🖊️️🤖

Cryptology firm cancels elections after losing encryption key25 November 2025 Share Save Laura Cress Technology reporter Share SaveGetty ImagesA firm considered one of the leading global voices in encryption has cancelled the announcement of its leadership election results after an official lost the encrypted key needed to unlock them. The International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) uses an electronic voting system which needs three members, each with part of an encrypted key, to access the results. The IACR is a global non-profit organisation which was founded in 1982 with the aim to "further research" in cryptology, the science of secure communication. The Association used an open source electronic voting system called Helios for the process. Whilst two of the trustees uploaded their share of the encrypted material online, a third never did. 🖊️️🤖

📰 Raw milk CEO whose products have been recalled may lead US raw milk policy (direct link), posted in SERIOUS NEWS ONLY (👍56 👎1)

Raw milk CEO whose products have been recalled may lead US raw milk policy

The idea, he told the Guardian, would be to create a “raw milk ordinance”, mirroring the existing federal “standard milk ordinance”. McAfee’s Raw Farm in Fresno supplies raw milk and milk products to grocery stories across California, and has the unique distinction of supplying the kefir used in the smoothies at Los Angeles’s celebrity-approved Erewhon market. Contact with raw milk and the handling of raw milk, however, has been associated with infections – especially among dairy workers. Antibodies to H5N1, however, have not been found in raw milk products, and cow antibodies would not confer immunity to humans. The California department of food and agriculture also quarantined the farm and suspended the distribution of Raw Farm products produced on or after 27 November. 🖊️️🤖

Nearly 90% of Windows Games now run on Linux, latest data shows — as Windows 10 dies, gaming on Linux is more viable than ever

However, the most recent stats from ProtonDB (via Boiling Steam) highlight that we are edging towards a magnificent milestone. The latest distilled data shows that almost 90% of Windows games now run on Linux. Having nine in ten Windows games accessible in a new Linux install is quite an achievement. The main difference seems to be that Boiling Steam doesn’t seem to care whether Steam Deck performance is a gaming-limiting factor. Moreover, Boiling Steam notes that other devs just seem to be averse to non-Windows gamers. 🖊️️🤖

If Valve creates an "entry point" for living room PCs, the console-beating Steam Machines will follow, argues Baldur's Gate 3's publishing director

I was surprised, in particular, by the muted response to the Steam Machine in our comments. The Steam Machine can only muster up 8GBs compared to the 10GB in the Xbox Series X and the 10 to 12GB in the PS5. VRAM is the memory dedicated to storing graphical information when playing games. I've found the response to Valve's hardware reveals fascinating because it's shown the different ways PC games fit into peoples' lives. But, I know for others the order of their interest in Valve's hardware will be radically different to mine. 🖊️️🤖

Valve announces three new products: the Steam Frame, Steam Machine and Steam Controller

We tested Valve's NEW hardware: Steam Frame, Steam Machine and Steam Controller | Critical Rig - YouTube Watch OnFollowing on from the success of the Steam Deck, Valve is creating its very own ecosystem of products. The Steam Frame, Steam Machine, and Steam Controller are all set to launch in the new year. Four cameras on the outside of the Steam Frame track your surroundings and it can track you in the dark. It's also designed to work with the new and improved Steam Controller—a dedicated antenna on the Steam Machine can connect up to four Steam Controllers. That's one more than last time, and importantly means that the Steam Controller is as much a 'standard' controller as any other. 🖊️️🤖

Initially concerned about a cracked egg sac after 2 weeks, I thought the eggs had died. She built a new, green sac after eating tomato hornworms. Later, babies emerged from the first sac—the white was molting, not fungus! So many adorable, colorful babies are hatching, and more are to come. I’m feeding her to recover. The plant will be composted after they leave. 💚

Nintendo’s Monster Capturing Patent Got Rejected by Japan’s Patent Office Due to Lack of Originality

In a surprising, or rather not so surprising, twist, Nintendo’s patent for its monster capturing mechanic in Pokémon got rejected by Japan’s Patent Office. However, the Japan Patent Office rejected the application, citing that the patent lacked originality as similar mechanics already existed in prior games. How Nintendo’s Patent Application Could Go ForwardKnowing how persistent Nintendo’s legal team is means that the lawsuit isn’t going anywhere. For starters, it can amend its patent application to address the JPO’s objections or appeal the decision through Japan’s Intellectual Property High Court. The JPO’s findings support that defense, showing that similar mechanics existed across multiple franchises well before Nintendo’s patent filing. 🖊️️🤖

US government uses Halo images in a call to 'destroy' immigration, Microsoft declines to comment

The post continues a pattern by the Trump administration of co-opting copyrighted material without permission for use as propaganda. Several hours after the White House post, the Department of Homeland Security put up its own Halo image with the message "Destroy the Flood," and a link to the ICE recruitment page. (Image credit: Homeland Security (Twitter))Where the Trump-as-Master Chief post is merely cringeworthy, the Homeland Security message is flat-out dangerous. GameStop, apparently comfortable spreading the US government's anti-immigrant propaganda, retweeted the White House tweet with another image of Trump dressed as Master Chief, with the fat-faced JD Vance meme in the background as Cortana. I can't even begin to guess at this point—I can only force you to look at it, as I had to 🖊️️🤖

OutRun: Amiga Edition by reassembler

An optimized port of SEGA's 1986 arcade game OutRun, utilizing the original 68000 assembly code, to mid-spec Commodore Amiga computers. Whilst small compromises have been made to accommodate differences between the arcade hardware and the Amiga - this looks and plays almost identical to the original.

InstallationFull instructions are provided in the bundled readme.txt, but the arcade ROMs (not included) must be converted to a format suitable for the Amiga with the supplied Python script. The folder structure, should then be transferred to a folder on your Amiga. You'll need a small amount of familiarity with the Amiga to get this running. 🖊️️🤖

Drawing the map, getting the sprites on screen, moving them about with animation - the hard work's already been done! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MemoryEventually with all that working correctly I now had about 7kb of RAM left to actually implement all the gameplay, sound, title screen, game over, disk routines etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Disk LoadingHaving put all the map data in the 2,048 bytes at $0200-09FF I hit a snag when trying to load map data from disk for levels 2-4. It cost perhaps 100 bytes but was well worth it to have the map data safely tucked away in an area of memory that is not normally used. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The C16 version of CharPad was invaluable, here is the character set and part of the map for Level 1. 🖊️️🤖

Family Computing Interviews Jack Tramiel after Atari Purchase (1985)

Earlier this winter, Tramiel invited FAMILY COMPUTING to his office for a private talk, in which he outlined his four-pronged approach to the computer market. He expects to keep the Atari videogame business going, and says he’ll keep selling and improving the Atari 800XL line. So, I didn’t have it in mind to buy Atari, but just to start a new computer business, which in my opinion the world needs. Tramiel: I want to have an Atari computer in every single home. This Atari computer is not a business computer, which you use for receivables or inventory. 🖊️️🤖

Mayor Spapens had previously voiced concern in September, calling the concert "morally problematic." At the time, he admitted the city had limited power over the venue’s programming but indicated discomfort with Draiman’s planned appearance. Google Calls ICE Agents a Vulnerable Group, Removes ICE-Spotting App ‘Red Dot’

Both Google and Apple recently removed Red Dot, an app people can use to report sightings of ICE officials, from their respective app stores, 404 Media has found. The move comes after Apple removed ICEBlock , a much more prominent app, from its App Store on Thursday following direct pressure from U.S. Department of Justice officials. Google told 404 Media it removed apps because they shared the location of what it describes as a vulnerable group that recently faced a violent act connected to these sorts of ICE-spotting apps—a veiled reference to ICE officials. The move signals a broader crackdown on apps that are designed to keep communities safe by crowdsourcing the location of ICE officials. A long-running immigration support group on the ground in Chicago, where ICE is currently focused, told 404 Media some of its members use Red Dot. 🖊️️🤖

FBI Uncovers Al-Qaeda Plot To Just Sit Back And Enjoy Collapse Of United States

WASHINGTON—Putting the nation on alert against what it has described as a “highly credible terrorist threat,” the FBI announced today that it has uncovered a plot by members of al-Qaeda to sit back and enjoy themselves while the United States collapses of its own accord. A recently declassified CIA report confirmed that all known al-Qaeda-affiliated organizations—from Pakistan to Yemen, and from Somalia to Algeria—have been instructed to kick back and enjoy the show as the United States’ federal government, energy grid, and industrial sector are rendered impotent by internal dissent, decay, and mismanagement. Soon, the United States will watch in horror as its bridges crumble, its desperate citizens suffer in want of medicine and paying employment, and its once vast riches are reduced to naught. The FBI has also warned that numerous al-Qaeda agents may have established sleeper cells for the purpose of “getting a kick out of” the nation’s downfall on American soil. “If we’d listened to experts or even our own common sense, we would’ve realized that this plot was being actively orchestrated within our own borders. 🖊️️🤖

‘I Am Not a Secret Nazi’: Graham Platner Tattoo Controversy Roils Maine Senate Race

Embattled Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner found himself in the middle of another controversy Tuesday when a video surfaced showing a tattoo on his chest that appeared to portray imagery commonly associated with neo-Nazi groups. Democrats see the race as one of their best chances to flip a red seat during the 2026 midterm elections. On Platner’s chest appears a baseball-size tattoo of a distinctly designed skull and crossbones, which the outlet reports is commonly associated with Nazi groups. The tattoo, advocacy groups have said, resembles a Nazi Totenkopf tattoo. But The Book of the Damned was playful, slippery, so unlike the earnest tomes common to the genre. If there is no difference between the real and the unreal, anything is possible, and just as likely impossible. “I think we’re property”, Fort wrote. Or, perhaps not; so skeptical he could not accept even his own authority, he had given up theorizing. “We have expressions: we don’t call them explanations: we’ve discarded explanations with beliefs.” 🖊️️🤖
