Important note: This doesn't suddenly mean that Chick-Fil-A and the people who own it are suddenly good guys now.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 16 points 18 hours ago

If you think Chic-Fil-A is woke (not saying you, just people in general), you probably should become a fan of Marjorie Taylor-Greene. She's also suddenly become a huge supporter of Leftist politics and isn't a piece of shit racist. /s

I mean, how many companies are maintaining their DEI programs these days?

I’m not gonna say Chick-fil-A are perfect angels, but the article is about a guy who is upset because one of the locations in Utah celebrated a gay marriage and corporate backed them up. That’s a very different Chick-fil-A than in 2012.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 15 hours ago

Not really. The issue is the corporate overlords at that company donating millions of dollars to shitty things like conversion therapy camps.

They donate to a huge range of shitty things to this day.

They are trash.

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago

They went through a very public divestment of the company from all the “family” centric hate groups. The owners still donate to them personally but the company’s charitable giving arm does not.

You could call them woke for “backing up” a gay marriage or you could say they chose not to go to the trouble of breaking heads over some gay marriage. I know the Trump era has emboldened the worst of us, but that doesn’t mean everyone is for sure willing to prove that their PR has been phony all along. They don’t have enough to gain.

also the guy who is upset is literally linked to at least three guys (one of whom was JOSH DUGGAR) who sexually assaulted children.

Surprisingly, Apple. https://www.apple.com/diversity/

Not trying to sound pro-them, to be clear. I just use that page as a Fascism canary.

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I’m not surprised by that. Apple does plenty of evil shit, and has straight-up bribed Trump because it’s the wise business move, but they’ve been ostensibly “socially progressive” for most of the company’s history.

[–] nullroot@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Or maybe they just actually know diversity is a good thing that helps a company make better products. Apple never struck me as particularly stupid, just evil.

Oh absolutely.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 70 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That happened?! I’m frankly stunned.

Is it possible for Chic-fil-a to ever redeem itself in your eyes?

If they fired everyone involved with every controversy and started donating every cent of profit to LGBT charity groups, would you say they were a good company, or is it once tainted always tainted.

Chic-fil-a has made a lot of changes in the past decade and a half, and I'm of the opinion that, if no amount of self reflection and change can ever make us reconsider our condemnation, then there's no reason for anything to try and change, as it won't stop the hate.

Not that Chic-fil-a is perfect, but I would argue they are now as good or better than any other fast food chain we're not actively hating on. They actually pay their employees more than minimum wage and give them one guaranteed weekend day off if nothing else.

So why continue to put them down now that it's "mission accomplished?" If the goal was for them to change, and they have, it seems that we should bring them back into the fold, no?

I honestly haven't been following them.

Did they ever admit fault? That's big for me. An explicit "we were wrong"

That's the big thing for me. To be forgiven, you must first apologize. Then you must make amends.

And yes, for some harms, there are no amends great enough.

[–] dontsayaword@piefed.social 32 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think redemption is possible, but I'm skeptical. Will definitely look into this more.

A very important point that we should all remember. It's critical to continue a no-tolerance policy of intolerance, but to accept those who want to change.

I'm not running to Chick-fil-A anytime soon but the point remains.

For me it would either take a reversal of all the bullshit deregulation of campaign finance laws, or for all the bigots in the Cathy family to be ousted entirely.

Open for business on Sundays and we'll talk.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

the bar for capitalists pigs is incredibly low...but to give credit where it's do, they atleast pay a halfway decent wage, take basic measures to keep employees safe/healthy (shade/hested spaces in winter, for drive through people), are relatively good in insuring QC in their supply chain, and actually have a pretty generous franchise setup.

admittedly these are things that the overwhelming majority of the West just...insures via basic government regulation, but they sure could be a hell of a lot worse.

alls i'm saying is when/if the Revolution happens, their CEO isnt even in the top 50-100 people that need to get got.

This is true. They are not "the face of the resistance", or whatever Bluesky dems are saying nowadays.
