My way of choice is to say "I feel old" when people mention something they enjoyed as a kid that came out when I was an adult. For example the phrases "my childhood Nintendo Switch" or "I couldn't vote when Trump was elected" make my back hurt.
melee is an incredibly deep game and has provided me with far more replay value than yugioh or purple heinz
I do not find the smash games after melee all that fun, Melee was something else and Sakurai watering down the gameplay for the sake of the casual gamer (despite the fact that Melee was mega popular with casual gamers already) makes me unreasonably upset.
the only boomer opinion I allow myself to have is getting kinda slightly mad about modern smash fans claiming it's basically the same as classic format, in-depth fighting games. I don't like melee but the mechanics and execution there are way closer than the others (which are admittedly very fun party games).
They do share the barest fundamentals like spacing, neutral/advantage, combo/trap/punish, especially early-to-mid stock before it transitions to more offstage stuff
Beyond that I think it's pretty widely accepted now that "platform fighter" is a distinct genre.
Which I think is cool! I just hate to see them compared and given recognition over more "traditional" genres because of popularity. It's honestly like comparing apples and oranges. The offstage mechanics are their own hugely exploitable portion of gameplay that aren't really reflected in the likes of Street Fighter or Tekken etc. and deserve recognition, but damn did I get salty about people trash talking SF in comparison to smash, or for derivative platform fighters like Multiversus 🤮 winning at TGA (tbh a pointless award but yk) over beloved series.
Yeah that probably just comes with the "nintendo nostalgia wankfest" territory unfortunately. If the genre was born out of an original IP like fuckin Brawlhalla or something, it'd still be a side thing to classic fighters instead of people trying to treat it like a competition or even a successor. Anyway fuck multiversus and respect to the classic fighters even if they aren't my thing.
Ultimate has finally backtracked far enough from the balloon-slapping physics of Brawl that I don't mind anymore. It's no Melee but it's at least a reliably fun party game again, which is all I ask of it.

They've done an awesome job with the cast and paying homage to all the different games, I just find the actual gameplay very unsatisfying

It was Pearl for me but, Platinum was way better. Emerald was great too.
I can relate to most of it except "2005 was lit." The whole Bush years were trash. That's why everyone was upset and listening to Linkin Park/ System of a Down.
But we got to “Rock Against Bush”, twice!
I always preferred Morrowind. That said Smash Bros Melee is an absolute classic. As someone getting close to mid 30

i'm 20, and my early elementary experience was everything from gameboys and 90s pokemon to mario galaxy and adventure time to angry birds and youtube poop MLG brainrot. the gameboy because my parents couldn't afford a DS til i was 6, and 90s shows because my i got a tablet in 2nd grade and netflix/youtube had a lot of 90s shit.
Oh god it's me. Just replace the Pokemon trilogy with the Need For Speed trilogy. I'm only in my mid 20s I don't deserve to be called out like this...

I love the beginning of the game it has such a weird dreamlike quality to it. Then I get to closing oblivion gates and quit
I loved those albums, but I was usually listening while playing Perfect Dark.
I remember my friend lending me his Toxicity CD when my dad dropped him off, listening to it in the car on the way home, and having my mind blown. Besides being the most aggressive music I'd ever heard, it was my first exposure to overtly political music; the album opens with Prison Song, which dispenses with any sort of metaphor and is a straight-up polemic, introducing me to the effects of the drug war and CIA drug trafficking and regime change.
