I don't have a car nor a house and I'm in my 40ies. I've been told multiple times that I'm not a responsible adult as long as I don't have one of these.

Just turned 50 and still ride a skateboard.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Same.

I figure I won't die as long as I kep skating. Skate or die, right?

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

You don't quit skating cause you got old, you got old cause you quit skating.

[–] stoicmaverick@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

That's fine. It just means that you're rad.

According to my spouse: play D&D.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

I started playing D&D as a two or three year old kid. Admittedly back then my involvement mas limited. My parent's D&D group called me "the Hobbit Thief," as they would put me to bed, and then I would sneak into the room, and steal dice off the table. Apparently I would then sneak back to my room and hide said dice under my mattress.accordong to my mother, either I was extremely fast, or they didn't notice the missing dice for several months. I had also taught myself to pick locks by that point, but that was to escape the tyranny of being inside, but I digress.

My first character I rolled up was when I was 5 or 6. No I don't remember them, but I bet my dad and mom still have the character sheet.

My parents are now in their late 70s and early 80s. They still play D&D and recommended being a DM to people that think they want kids. Apparently there is a fair bit of overlap in running a fun game, and a functional family.

I am a parent, and this tells me I lack the requisite energy and creativity to be a DM. I struggle enough as it is.

D&D became popular in the eighties. Why should people who played it then start hating it as they get older?

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 8 points 4 days ago (5 children)

The only way your spouse could be correct is if you're still playing 2e and you're under 50.

Sleeping with a cuddly toy. My parter converted me and they're great. Tbh, they actually make a lot of sense as a middleaged person. Now that I'm old and less flexible, I end up with a sore back or shoulder if I don't have proper support when sleeping. And I'd much rather have a big lion buddy than some weird orthopedic pillow or Dutch wife.

Well... Last night I watched the original Care Bears movie, in VR as a Care Bear avatar and would join in on every Care Bear Stare since the avatar had that as a feature.

I am 40 years old.

Asking strangers for permission to pet their dogs.

Petting strangers' dogs.

[–] wirelesswire@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I took my dog to a local renaissance fair during one of their dog days, and had a healthy mix of people of all ages asking to pet her. Out of the dozens of people who pet her, only a couple didn't ask. It's always a good idea to ask before petting a stranger's dog.

Watch a lot of Antiques Roadshow, documentaries, etc.

[–] win95@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Bold & easy coloring books. People are very judgemental about it since it looks like a children's coloring book, but there's a reason it's in the top selling books lists online. Got some cheap alcohol markers and an audiobook on my headphones and I'm gone for the next few hours.

Drink like I'm still 24.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Play video games, according to a lot. Be absolutely enamored by cats? Some people have told me only toddlers like kitties so, what? Confusing.

[–] wirelesswire@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Who the hell thinks only toddlers should really like cats? I guess the millions of cat owners worldwide are wrong?

Clean and cook for myself.

Apparently I'm supposed to hire maids and cooks or something.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This isn't ageist. This is classist.

been framed to me that a 'successful and grown' man does not do these things for him. he has a wife or he hires outside help

Lego. I mean, it's perfectly appropriate for all ages, but some people (mostly older folks) still seem to think it's for children only.

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 days ago

Up to age 99, but then you aren't allowed to play with them.

Feed pigeons. I am not an old lady, although I sometimes feel like it :' )

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Being a friend to pigeons is awesome. They’re the cutest, chillest lil birds and there’s something magical about that bond with them. Ignore the haters! 🐦

[–] KokusnussRitter@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They are truly great. It's the sweetest thing when they start cooing and develop some (albeit food-based) trust to come a little closer to you :3

In case anyone who is reading this want's to start feeding pigeons or ducks, please don't use bread since it can cause health issues in birds. Use bird food or frozen (but thawed) peas instead and conduct your own research.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Seeds and nuts, as well as some dry doggy kibble is surprisingly good for our dinosaur friends. At least corvids and pigeons. They'll even start bringing you gifts. I currently have a murder that has been trained that dollars are very appreciated by me. I do have to dry them out since they put them all into the dog water bowl......

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

They are an abandoned species. We made them just like dogs, and then abandoned them in the mid 1800s because of a sickness scare that had more to do with fleas than pigeons. We wrote into their instincts to ask us for food, and then just tossed them aside.

I want to vandalize every single sign I see that says that "feeding the pigeons is littering and carrys a $250 fine."

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

[–] vortexal@sopuli.xyz 10 points 3 days ago

This probably isn't out of the ordinary, but I'm not against playing video games that were made for children even though I'm going to turn 30 at the end of the year. I don't always play them but if I try one and it turns out to be good, then I'll play it.

I'm also not against watching shows or movies meant for children either but it's pretty rare that I do.

[–] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 days ago

I try to get around by means other than driving myself in a car.

Also, in this thread: cool ideas

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

In spring, I like to find puddles on forest roads and trails and dig small ditches and watch the water flow out.

I also do other kinds of forest infrastructure maintenance - trimming branches on narrow trails, clearing fallen trees, and building small bridges over wet spots. Occasionally, I mark hard-to-see trails by tying orange tape to branches along the way.
