He did it on a snow day

[–] macke49@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Oh a pic from 1987

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 95 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is this the guy who killed himself after the speech?

[–] Carmakazi@piefed.social 96 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah, he got caught in some sort of fraud and sucked on a .357 on live TV.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip 45 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Iirc he was falsely accused/a scapegoat or something

Sidenote, this came up in my search while I was refreshing my memory

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He wasn't falsely accused, he just claimed he was, to protect his memory for his family. There's enough evidence for me personally to convict him, starting with the notebook that had the date of the meeting with the bribers torn out. Just that one page.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 1 day ago

Also, while I am... unsure of what to think about the whole thing, I do recall that basically, if he killed himself instead of going to jail, somehow, that ended up so that his family would still be elligible for his pension pay out, or something like that.

Yep, ok, I'm not nuts:

Death benefits

Since Dwyer died in office, his widow Joanne was able to collect full survivor benefits totaling more than $1.28 million (equivalent to about $3.63 million in 2025), which at the time was the largest death benefit payment ever made by the Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement System. If Dwyer had been sentenced, state law would have prohibited the payment of his state-provided pension benefits.[14][100] A spokesman for Dwyer suggested that he may have killed himself to preserve the pension benefits for his family, whose finances had been ruined by legal defense costs.[101]

Man that sounds delicious, why do these politicians these days have to be such picky eaters

[–] dumbass@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We could force feed them, hypothetically speaking.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 5 points 1 day ago

The French could bring the knives!

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 63 points 1 day ago

Fetterman, if you're listening...

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Please let's see the current leader do this when he realizes the child rape walls are closing in on him and there's no more escape

[–] First_Thunder@lemmy.zip 50 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He would need to feel shame of any kind

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

yeah, there are events that cause you to lose your sense of shame. I am confident krasnov has been through at least one of them, given the behavior he has displayed and the level of wealth he was born into.

[–] Iunnrais@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Narcissism is a spectrum, but at the far end of that spectrum, the narcissist is unable to feel anything except existential dread at the fact that they cannot feel anything, which is relieved by seeing reactions from other people, which is called “supply”. Trump is is at absolutely pathological levels of narcissism, and thus clearly cannot feel shame. The most we can make him feel is a supply withdrawal.

[–] ViscloReader@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Or life withdrawal

[–] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

It's not what he said but how he said it

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 16 points 1 day ago

You know, in certain older civilized cultures, when men failed as entirely as you have, they would throw themselves on their swords. -- The Operative

We should bring that back.

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 day ago

Norm Macdonald thought this guy killing himself was hilarious

[–] ThanksObama@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

Good shot man!

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

In hindsight, he probably did it not out of any shame, but because he wanted to go out in a way that might make people view him as a tragic, misunderstood figure. If Epstein did kill himself, it was probably for the same reason. Narcissists, both of them.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I had read that his wife had some condition that needed health care, and if he were convicted and removed from office, she would lose that coverage. However, because he killed himself before that, she remained covered under the government plan being his widow.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Once again a problem solvable by a functional government

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Same thing corrupt cops do when they're caught, they off themselves and make it look like they went out a hero.

Ask not what your country can do for you, but how soon you blow your brains out.

I’m so lost can someone tell me who he is

[–] edm@thelemmy.club 28 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The song was written about the public suicide of Pennsylvania state treasurer R. Budd Dwyer on January 22, 1987, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Dwyer had been convicted of bribery charges in December 1986, and was expected to receive a lengthy sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Malcolm Muir. Professing his innocence and decrying the legal system, Dwyer shot and killed himself with a .357 Magnum revolver during a live televised press conference.

Damnnn off of bribery charges? Our politicians used to have some semblance of decency

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Part of what made it so memorable - and inspired the song - is that school was cancelled that day so a bunch of kids were watching the press conference.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 10 points 1 day ago

Imagine such a thing as criminal charges for a US politician today. Different times.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is Budd Dwyer, who ended his life after giving a speech. You can read about the event here.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 3 points 1 day ago

You also used to be able to watch the video on YouTube, but now we live in a PG-13 society

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Hey man, nice shot!

[–] dumbass@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

He had his constituents dreams in the back of his head.
