On a good day I'm up around 5 AM, but I often find myself up even earlier than that. I joined my first Lemmy instance during one of these bouts of insomnia, prompting my username.

My avatar is from a worldbuilding project I work on.

Lemmy let's you have a user avatar? I've never seen one using Voyager.

My username is a Latin phrase meaning (this particular definition is from Wikipedia): In contemporary parlance, it means tyrannical leaders will inevitably be overthrown. The phrase also suggests that bad but justified outcomes should, or eventually will, befall tyrants.

I think rebellion against the US government is required at this point regardless of your political affiliation as our Public Servant's have shown to not care for who they represent, the American people.

I don't have an avatar because I can't figure out how to change it. Looked it up plenty and always come away empty handed.

[–] early_riser@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

On the web, click on your username in the upper right and then click on settings. Under Avatar you can browse your local file system for a suitable file.

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 4 points 13 hours ago

Lemmy.zip has/had a mismatch between frontend and backend validation on usernames. When the frontend allows something that the backend rejects, you get some random "InvalidName" pop-up on form submission.

I tried several different variations of my preferred user name, but I couldn't figure out what was violating backend validation, so finally I settled on InvalidName. Which triggered a server error (500 error or timeout or something, I don't recall).

But finally, one glorious moment in time, the lemmy.zip server accepted InvalidName2 without choking, and the rest is history.

I'm autistic, have adhd, am neither right or left handed, and am a sociopath.

I didn't choose the weird life, the weird life chose me, I just accepted it.

World of Warcraft forums night-shift.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

As a child in the local library, I always passed the large print section and there was always this one book there: The Spitting Image. It had a furious-looking gargoyle on the cover and it used to scare me at first, but over time it seemed goofier and goofier. And since as an adult I have to fight the urge to be goofy when I should be serious, I felt like it was suitable.

[–] qaz@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I wanted something short and unique and this was somewhat pronounceable with a vowel in the middle

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

I have the user name “aeao” on Xbox. Just 4 letters. One day it’ll be worth millions!

[–] AstroLightz@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Picked a random space word and a random object in the room at the time.

My avatar was created by me a long time ago based on the "Astro" part of my username.

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Just being honest and upfront, no reason to question otherwise.

[–] YICHM@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

romanized real name; result of clicking in Inkscape for 2 hrs.

[–] YourMomsTrashman@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Should be obvious

"We all turn the wheel... I am the one who decides the way in which it turns."

It's from the Wug Test.

"This is a man who knows how to gling. He is glinging. Yesterday, he _____"

Also, what client are you on that shows you avatars? I have not used one yet that shows avatars.

[–] piranhaconda@mander.xyz 2 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

I really liked watching B-grade 90s-00s SciFi movies with my dad when I was a kid. That was the name of one that came out around the time I made a reddit account, I don't know if I ever even watched it, it just sounded like a good username. Reminds me, I should probably make a new lemmy account that's not tied to the same name

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

My use name is cobbled together from a word list of Tolkiens valarin language. Akasan means story telling and the -Z suffix makes it a personal name. I thought the extra h would aid in pronunciation, but I'm practise most people just say aka.

My avatar it's my own Photoshop of one of the doges of Venice, with a Shibu face. Mind that I made this before musk ruined the doge meme and I won't let him run this. A clan mate took it, drew a mustache+soul patch on it and made the texts instead of historical, lewd as she thought that more appropriate (I do sport a mustache and soul patch irl)

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

I had just heard the expression: "It helps the general effort." It was in a Discworld audiobook. It made me think: "Yeah, I could use some help right now." That was still rattling around in my head when I had to come up with a username. I don't remember what I was having trouble with, so I guess that worked out.

[–] thedoctorlady@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

I'm a... doctor lady.

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

We call someone who can't do anything right, or is “useless”,“un zero a l'esquerra”, a zero to the left (as in the zero in 01, which is the same as 1, making the 0 irrelevant).

I consider myself one such zero to the left, but that's too long, so leftzero. 🤷‍♂️

Also... lemmy has profile pictures..?

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 3 points 15 hours ago

Now THAT is a clever insult.

I only know one guy who is smart enough to understand it tho.

I chose my username when I was still a teenager, originally with the meaning that I'm a nerd, but not like an amazing or extremely smart nerd, nor extremely awkward. Just your average guy with autism and nerdy on particular subjects.

I've mostly kept with it because it's how most of my online friends know me, and I still think it's part of my identity, although I've since developed interests that a stereotypical nerd might not have such as cycling, mountain biking, travelling and hiking.

[–] dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Username checks out

[–] iup9@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

I typed some alphabets and numbers that just popped into my mind at the moment.

[–] Az_1@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Took the name I use everywhere online, put an _, and chose the lowest number I could, which I do on basically every platform

[–] treep@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

A long time ago my when my little brother was in first grade, he got a homework sheet where he had to unscramble a bunch of names. I thought this scrambled version sounded cool, and have been using it as username everywhere ever since.

[–] queerdo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm proudly a queer weirdo:)

It's kind of the slogan of my state

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

Despite what you might think my name has a story. The first part has to do with the sound you would hear right before you died in an early FPS game, and the second part was the clan I was a part of at the time (happy). None of my name has to do with drugs.

[–] WhereAreMySocks@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Occasionally, my socks go missing.

[–] Libb@piefed.social 2 points 22 hours ago

Kinda/remotely/vaguely is the phonetic version of the surname my best friend gave me some 40+ years ago.

The avatar is a red blob hinting at what I'm into (plus my name) ;)

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 22 hours ago

There's this epic show called Psych. Hidden pineapples appear in pretty much every episode and movies.

[–] altasshet@lemmy.ca 2 points 22 hours ago

Probably misremembered term from an Anne Rice novel. Google gives me nothing. As such it seems pretty unique.

[–] zlatiah@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

The first part is just an alias and doesn't really have an interesting story

The second part is the airport code of the city I lived in when this account was created. I was actually quite curious if anyone could have guessed that without me saying it out loud

[–] anas@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

It’s my actual name, I got it for my birthday.

[–] Mr_Fish@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

My name is Joseph, and a lot of kids mispronounce it as "Jofish" or something similar. I can't remember who actually started the nickname for me, but it caught on. It doesn't hurt that I enjoy being in and around water anyway.

[–] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 12 hours ago

You have an funny account name

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Keys on a qwerty keyboard. Just so that it's different here from everywhere else.

The only reason I have a username and not an avatar is because I was forced to pick a username but not an avatar when registering.

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 2 points 23 hours ago

Somehow it just seemed to tie things together.

I read Berserk.

[–] OutwateredFish@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Moved from one end of my country all the way to another not too long ago, and I've felt like a fish outta water since. Or, an Outwatered Fish.

[–] a_person@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago

I am just a person, you dont need to know anything more about me.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

I'm a fan of the poem and have had this name for 30+ years.

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Lemmy has avatars? I don't see them, and I don't want to. It's one of the annoyances with new reddit. I just have no use for them, nor do want to waste space seeing anyone elses.

My username? If you know you know, if you don't you wouldn't care anyways.

Mash up of minglewood and August West.

No avatar because I can’t be bothered. I don’t see them on my app anyway. As far as I can tell, nobody has them.

I was watching some movie, and I was like ooh, centipedes would make good farriers; they can use their body along the hoof to draw a stencil by just passing a pencil along all of its feet!

And that was silly so here we are.
