He obviously misspoke but that's hilarious

[–] AGM@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 month ago

This and referring to everyone on stage as "contestants" were both pretty funny.

Wow. Just silliness. The only residual discussion after the debate is "Did he say 'gay' or 'gagged'?"

Says a lot about the importance of the debate in the overall election.

Think I read some study several years back (probably following the Trump-Clinton one) that concluded almost everyone always perceives their "team's" candidate as having won the debate, and the number of voters swayed by a stellar performance from another candidate is negligible.

Yeah, they're pretty damn pointless...

[–] Daryl@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Except the news media thinks they are, so we will probably continue to have them, if not just for the entertainment value. They fill in some of the 'air time'.

can someone explain this to me?

[–] KittyKalledKarma@slrpnk.net 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Canadian leadership debate tonight, guy on the right is carney, guy on the left is Pierre Polievere or PP.

Carney asked about PP's refusal to get a security clearance despite being leader of the opposition in parliament. PP was stumbling in his response.

[–] loomy@lemy.lol 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

ok but why would he be gay for getting a clearance?

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago (3 children)

As someone else mentioned, he was probably trying to say the word 'gagged' and he talks weird.

This guy is weird enough that he can't even have media around unless he is scripted, so it doesn't surprise me.

I hate the guy but I was actually surprised with his debate performance tonight

In the next 10 seconds he said 'gagged' so pretty mild fuckup I think

[–] loomy@lemy.lol 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

thats mildly entertaining tho

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I mean. That reaction by Carney is excellent clowning.

[–] brax@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

I hate defending a moron, but I'm also for fairness. If you listen closely, you can hear the "-gged" it's just not well pronounced.

He had no problem being gagged in that moment, clearly.

[–] AChiTenshi@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It's a slip up on PPs part. He's trying to say gagged but either due to getting the thought from his brain to his mouth getting mixed up, or just slipping up on the word It sounds much more like gay.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago

freudian slip.

Gagged. Are you all really hearing gay or is this a big troll?

[–] AChiTenshi@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

I heard gay on my first viewing. After playing it again I picked up on what he was actually trying to say. I think k it's something along the lines of mondegreen where you can hear the wrong words in songs.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Not a troll. I heard it when I watched live and didn't figure out he meant gagged until he said it a second time. Listening to it again I can hear it either way, his pronunciation at the end is just a little off.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

PP is gay, make it known to his shitty conservative voters pls.

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They see him as a strongman. You won't have any luck with this.

[–] twopi@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

I think that's why conaervatives like PP but not JT.

Conservatives want to be the bottom so they don't like leaders they can fuck but rather prefer leaders who can fuck them.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Every accusation is a confession...

Seriously, probably meant to say gagged, and failed miserably. I still think it's a shit excuse.

[–] nyan@lemmy.cafe 5 points 1 month ago

Did PP's wife (who is present in way too high a percentage of his publicity material) know about this in advance? 🀣

[–] Lectral@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

He just took a drink of water too. Imagine if Carney had done a spit take.

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

He needs the Forrest Gump "d" in there.

It's a 17 second video…

[–] myersguy@lemmy.simpl.website 15 points 1 month ago

Weird, Voyager is just displaying it as an image. Opening it in Firefox linked me to the Imgur video.

My bad!

[–] Redex68@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He obviously said gagged. It literally sounds more like gagged than gay even if he did mispronounce.

[–] RoquetteQueen@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I agree it's obvious he meant to say "gagged", but it absolutely sounds like he said "gay".

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah he said it like Gaygd
